I came relatively late to the Hyperion series (I think Hyperion was originally published over 20 years ago) and in fact was unfamiliar with Dan Simmons' science fiction (my Simmons introduction was through his horror, most notably "Summer of Night") but I knew that he was a master of genre fiction. Simmons really stretched his chops (in a good way) on this one. The novel is set in a time in the future, Earth has been destroyed but her surviving humans have colonized several hundred worlds, most are included in the Protectorate of the Hegemony of Humankind. Hyperion is a planet in the outback of the Hegemony on the cusp of becoming included in the protectorate. The Hegemony has a sometimes hot, sometimes cold war brewing with the Ousters--some of Earth's earliest space faring folk who do not colonize planets and seem to hate the Hegemony. Hyperion seems to have some puzzling strategic importance to both of these factions (and possibly other powers). Against this backdrop, seven pilgrims are selected by the Church of the Shrike to make the often fatal pilgrimage to the mysterious and eerie Time Tombs of Hyperion. In a pretty cool take on the Canterbury Tales, Simmons has the pilgrims agree to each tell the story of how they came to be on this journey. What then follows is a wide range of stories which flow through different genres: science fiction, horror, even some straight up hard boiled noir detective stuff. This is a 7 Layer Burrito wrapped in a Chalupa wrapped in a Gordita with some Potato Oles on the side.
