This is a thriller of a high order, even though it's totally a true story. Strictly speaking, Eichenwald shouldn't have withheld certain information from us until the end, but I forgive him because this was so much fun.

I enjoyed this book. The subject matter is very much like a Jodi Piccoult novel. Very easy and enjoyable read.
Excellent book, I ploughed through the 600+ pages in three days. I love novels with dual-time narratives, especially ones like this that involve "documents" from the historical time period. All of the narratives combined to make an enthralling, authentic reading experience that I just couldn't believe wasn't real! I imagine that my fascination with polygamy and Mormonism probably added to my enjoyment of this story, but I imagine any fan of historical fiction would also love this book. 4.5*

I think I would have liked this book much better if I had sat down to read it all in one sitting, rather than a chapter here, a chapter there, before finally settling down and reading it in large chunks. Unfortunately, that was not possible with life right now. That being said, I still loved the book. I fell in love with Harris's depiction of Joe and his down-to-earth whimsy. Her writing is enchanting and sucks you in, making you not want to leave the world she's creating and its characters. I loved that there were subtle glimpses into the lives of those who played a role in Chocolat, which I adored when I read it last year. Blackberry Wine is not a sequel to that book, though, but a totally separate story which just happens to take place in the same town as Chocolat. After reading this, I can almost believe there is magic in food -- and the world.
Interesting recipes. Mostly vegetarian if not vegan. Didn't try any yet, but still hope to soon try my hand at the black-eyed pea croquettes, for starters!

"Violence, homosexuality and the spiritual emptiness of post-war Japan: these were Mishima's key themes. But not all of these nine stories (and one play) exemplify them; for there was also a streak of wry, ironic humour. Here, then, is truly compelling reading. There is shock, explosion, illumination. Here is Mishima. Here is Japan." That's the boast on tha back of my 1971 Penguin edition, and it's true! I'm usually not a fan of characters taking themselves too seriously, so I'm not sure why I don't hate the couple in "Patriotism". I think it's probably because they're also really sexy.
