** spoiler alert ** Another excellent children's book on Autism! It captures so very well some of the unique characteristics of children with autism. We especially liked how they described the boy not liking new people for the same reason he didn't like new shoes: "new people gave him blisters on his brain." His reaction to their great-aunt reminded us so much of Mikey and Nonna!

Within 20 years there were more than 30,000 in the United States alone, an explosive growth due largely to World War II, as soldiers and loved ones exchanged photos, hoping to cling to memories or moments in a world turned upside down. But by the 1960s the advent of Polaroid photography spelled the doom of the "four strip" that had become a fixture at arcades and drugstores everywhere. Maureen Johnson never disappoints, and this novel is just as amusing, sarcastic, interesting and intriguing as her others. Jane is no cookie cutter character and the ending of this novel is just as different and un-cliched as it could be. Additionally, Maureen Johnson has the unique ability to make young people, high school and growing up realistic. Her characters make morally ambiguous decisions, mistakes and snarky comments without the usual preaching commentary from the narrator or adult figures, and they offer questions and comments rather then seemingly all-knowing answers. Plus, this take on the Goethe story is really just much more fun.

I'd like to say I loved this book as much as the first book in this trilogy, but that would be a lie. This book suffers from poor editing. I feel like things were repeated over and over again, making the book two hundred pages too long. It felt long, which is never a good sign. We get a decent ending to the story, though I can't say I've ever seen a 40 page epilogue before. Clary is as annoying as usual, Simon as as confused about his identity as usual, and Magnus saves the story yet again. Even though this trilogy has issues, I think Clare does have a great character in the warlock Magnus and hopefully we'll see him again in a standalone. Not my favorite trilogy, but a decent read, even though it could have been into a shorter novel.
