From the beginning of the book, I thought I had the story figured out. Little did I know, there was an unexpected twist to come. The reason I picked it out was, well, the cover, I am ashamed to say. It ended up being an extremely enjoyable book that I was unable to put down.

The Economist gave this book a great review. http://economist.com/books/displaysto...
As I recall, this book kept me interested in the characters. I was also partial to the setting.

I think my lack of enthusiasm for this book stems from the fact that, as a teenage girl, the protagonist of the story seems like the kind of sleazy, middle-aged man I'd desperately avoid making eye contact with if we were to find ourselves sat near each other on public transport. Obviously I have next to nothing in common with the character of Milo Burke, but in the past I haven't had a problem reading books narrated by characters I couldn't relate much to - I also have nothing in common with Humbert Humbert, but I still quite enjoyed reading Lolita. And surely Humbert Humbert is the king of fictional sleazy middle-aged men...hmm. In the end, I skipped chapters 24-29 of 'The Ask' and just went straight to the final chapter, because I couldn't bring myself to leave the book unfinished, but I really, really didn't want to have to spend another hour of my life reading a book I wasn't enjoying. I did find it amusing in parts, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it 'that rare thing - a proper comic novel', as quoted on the cover of the book.

While I did enjoy this book, I don't know if I would have enjoyed it enough to give it four stars if I hadn't been stuck on a train for three hours with it. Don't get me wrong, it certainly isn't terrible and overall it was quite enjoyable, however it felt very contrived. I was always looking for the next 'reveal' - the next twist and turn - some of them obvious, some of them not. The sticker on the front says you will like this book if you like Jodi Picoult, and that isn't too far wrong. A very similar type of novel in terms of a 'moral' story being involved, however I think Jodi Picoult crafts and writes her novels better. This felt like a bit of a downgrade in comparison. Overall though, I found the book compelling enough to keep reading and finished it pretty quickly. The midwife's story was interesting and in the end you want to know what went on, but it comes across quite muddled at times with yet another 'secret' around each corner. How many secrets can one person have?! Therefore while I did like it, and wouldn't hestitate to pick up another Diane Chamberlain novel in future if it sounded interesting, it doesn't compell me to proactively seek out her other books. Interesting, but overall a bit melodramatic for my liking.
Scary... why have I read so many books about polygamy?
The ending is completely unsatisfying because I feel like there was supposed to be a sequel but this book didn't do well enough to warrant one. HOWEVER, it's entertaining and Paulina Porizkova has a certain flair for keeping you entertained into this world most of us never see. Plus it was $4.98 at Barnes and Noble...SCORE!
Think about it. Art that is designed to destroy itself. After a few years a sculpture disintegrates or rusts inwards, revealing a more complicated understructure. Very interesting stuff.

I really like Sanderson except... He talks too much. He tends to be redundant. For example, the gods are always followed by an entourage. I don't need to be told every time they walk three steps. Having said that, the imagery and story are well thought, the book gives plenty of plot twists and it never ends up where you think it will. The best part is that Sanderson doesn't fill the pages with filthy language and taudry affairs just to sell a book, he relies on the story to sell itself. Kudos to Sanderson.
