I've enjoyed all of the Nightwatch series, but this book didn't draw me in as much as the other ones did. I love the author's vision of light and dark forces maintaining an uneasy detente, and the concept of the Twilight is great. But part of what I enjoyed about the other books was Anton's struggle with morality. Even as a member of the Light, he had to do some morally repugnant things. I also enjoyed all the plots twists of the other books. This book was much more straightforward- Anton goes to Scotland, Anton goes to Samarkand. There's a conspiracy, but it's all figured out without a lot of sweat. Maybe the author has powered up his characters to the point that there isn't a lot of struggle or drama left. But I really want more of his books translated into English!

I stopped reading this after about 80-90 pages, so I'm not going to rate it. I didn't dislike the book, but I was feeling distant from the characters and plot. A lot of the action happened "off stage" and was reported by the narrator second-hand rather than being "observed" by the reader as an invisible onlooker. I think this is what caused me to become disengaged. If it wasn't so long, I might have carried on a little longer to see how it was when the mystery began to be resolved, but as I was less than 1/5 of the way through the book, the resolution was probably a long way off, so I decided to cut my losses. I might consider trying it again sometime.

Philadelphia Fox is borderline irritating thus the 3 stars in lieu of four. What makes her more agreeable than that darn librarian in Perfect Partners is our hero Nick. Yep, he was a wee bit stronger than her but she still came off as a wretched little girl. However, by the end there was no doub who was boss. There is a scene in the book where Nicks father is telling him how to handle her. It is priceless as is the scene where the whole clan is out to teach her about handling a gun. Only Jayne Ann Krentz can pin such a scene and get away with making it interesting. She uses such scenes to reel the reader in -- to get us to understand the characters especially the supporting / secondary ones. She goes beyond showing the bad in the bad guy, but at some point makes them human too. This is another fun read and because as is the norm with her books the supporting characters are such fun even the really nasty one's that they grab a piece of your heart too. I suppose that is the reason Philadelphia Fox kind of got on my nerves at times. Probably because I didn;t like her assesment of the people around her. Usually Jayne Ann Krentz heroine / hero get's a handle on the "bad/obnoxious characters" but it seeemed Ms. Fox never really did. She was toooooo "ME" oriented for my taste but the supporting cast made the book well worth reading and of course Nick was as usual the perfect heroine. He wasn't as deep a thinker as most of her hero's -- he didn't analysis but went more with his gut instinct on things.

A beautiful book, with some odd problems - the story seems to drag at a certain point, owing to the fact that so many characters have the same names. One begins to feel that this or that character's part in the story is just going on and on, when in reality its that there are several Aurelianos, several Jose Arcadios, among others. Things get a little confusing, trying to keep the various characters straight. Still, the spiritual aspects of the story are lyrical and lovely. At the same time, scenes of gritty realism are handled well - death and violence are depicted as simple matter of fact, making for a strange balance of magic and reality. The ending is amazingly good.

What I like about it is how the novel is divided into four parts. The first part focuses exclusively on Mariam, the second and fourth parts focus on Laila, and the third part switches focus between Mariam and Laila with each chapter. The story of two women...and how they learn to live together in one roof, secrets being told, apostate to the act of violence, sharing of love and patience. And how they end up in the end is for me to know and for you to find out. HEHE.
