A really great, albeit very sad, book. It shows the desperation of someone who has lost a loved one and takes the grieving process to a somewhat outlandish height.

This story is set during the Great Depression in the small town of Manifest, Kansas. Young Abilene has been sent to live in Manifest while her father works his railroad job during the summer. Her father lived in Manifest as a teenager and she longs to uncover some of his past. Abilene becomes acquainted with some of the towns most interesting characters and discovers that all is not what it seems. I really enjoyed this book and the way it contains a story within a story. Sometimes the pacing was a little slow, but the writing is well done. The themes may be a little mature for young readers, so be prepared to discuss prohibition, the KKK, World War I and the Great Depression.

So far, about 160 pages into the book, a lot has happened. Cleopatra has had most of her family die, gained and lost and gained her throne, and J. Caesar has come and gone (and left a reminder of himself). Enjoying.

I had to read this book with a dictionary in my lap, but I couldn't put it down. This book has inspired more side research then any 20 books i have read. If you like Robert Aton Wilson you will love this book. He makes geometry sound sexy. Nuff said.

Really 4.5 stars only because it drags a bit in the beginning, but once past that very engrossing and enjoyable. Read again for a book club selection and enjoyed it just as much the second time around. Terrific writing!
The problem with this book is one that plagues the genre. When the author goes back and forth between two time periods or two main characters, one is always more intriguing than the other. So the reader wants to push through the chapters of the lesser character and get to the good stuff, the preferred character. Harold's search is boring compared to Conan Doyle's life. I found myself wishing that the book was just about Doyle, nothing about the Sherlockians.

I'm going to start with the one thing that I enjoyed about this story because there honestly are only a few. How awesome was Coyote?! He may be my favorite character to enter Mercy's world. He was witty, and mischevious, and mysterious and he made rather dull moments more interesting. This book gave me a great new appreciation for the secondary characters in this series. The story was definitely lacking without them. I didn't enjoy reading this until around page 200. Mercy and Adam alone on their honeymoon would have been much better if Briggs would write an actual sex scene. It's not like there were many romantic moments and the passion seemed to be missing maybe because when they make love we miss the nice and nasty details. I honestly don't remember the last time I read a book that had sex scenes that never really seemed to happen. Yes, I understand now that it's Briggs' writing style, but I thought a honeymoon may be an exception. Although I had a hard time enjoying this book I still love Mercy's character and how unique she is. Adam isn't one of my favorite male leads, but I do like him too. Mercy and Adam together . . . not really all that exciting. I enjoy the world Mercy lives in but being outside of it and learning about Mercy's heritage was incredibly boring. Don't expect a lot of action or you will be as disappointed as I was. Now I'll say, despite my complaints, I will continue to read this series.
Mozart's Treatise is an important text for anyone interested in historical performance practice.
Very good, but nothing terribly original here. Still Dungy is setting a great example for young athletes.
I didnt not enjoy the book because i was not interested in it. however, there was one good thing about it. It helped me go to sleep. so if ur having trouble sleeping, READ THIS BOOK!!
