Lack of action in this novel replaced with a very complete description of human's "inner beast". We- humans are the most cruel and brutal creatures living. Are we able to control ourselves or we should be controlled?

the story of gemmy- half aborigine, half colon in a new white community setTling in he harsh lands of australia. It aveils how the ones who cant and dont want to adappt to the land, as they refuse to belong to it but want to possess it will become offenders....and turn to aggressivity in front of what they don't understand. Very realistic and moving.

I really enjoyed this novel. Rather than being focused on Jesse James, it followed the life of his mother who was just as fascinating a character as her outlaw son. I'm not sure how much I would have enjoyed and understood the story, however, if I didn't already have a fairly good grasp of the history of Jesse James. The book jumps around and a person unfamiliar with Jesse James might be confused at points. Yet, the point remains that the story is about Mamaw, Zerelda Cole James Samuel, not her son. She lived a hard life, a life more exciting than she might have liked, but it was a full life.

I don't read mainstream romance much but every so often, will read one because I need the mindlessness. More of a novella than a full-length novel, it was still enjoyable. I had read much better in the romance genre; I have also read much much worse. The plot was contrived, yes, but at least it was somewhat original. And there weren't too many POV-shifts within sections, which always makes me want to tear my hair out when they appear, and which seem to riddle romance books. The story's redeeming value are its characters, which are quirky and fun. There was a little too much angsty brooding at times, but it was nicely balanced out by stuff actually happening. Nice, quick, and mindless reading after a long week of work.

This was well-written, but I hated it. I had to physically get this book out of my house. I couldn't get up in the morning if this book represented my world view.

It's a shame that more people aren't familiar with the works of the late, great George Alec Effinger. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting him briefly before his untimely death in the 90s. He was a writer's writer, without a doubt, and a kind man at that. If you like your fiction bleak, it doesn't get much bleaker than Relatives. Effinger has crafted three protagonists who may be the same individual (or linked to the same individual). Three different characters live in three different places during different periods. Each character faces some crisis beyond his control. The central theme here is helplessness, I would say. These men are a product of a complacent society that allows the government or their political parties to control their lives. There is no hope. I highly recommend this book, but be prepared to be depressed.
Jay Erlich is a prominent vascular surgeon in New York. He has what most would call a dream life, a wife, kids and the ability to go where he would like without really worrying about money. His marriage is solid with his wife, Kathy, a veterinarian with a busy practice. If you ask Jay, he considers himself lucky. Not by the standards we would expect, but because he didn't wind up like his brother Charlie. Charlie has been diagnosed with being bi-polar and lives a meager existence on the coast of San Luis Obispo, along with his wife, Gabriella and son, Evan who have also managed to be bi-polar as well. So while they manage to scrap by on whatever the state allows, they do need help from Jay to make ends meet or to help when their car no longer runs. On the eve on Jay and Kathy's anniversary celebration at the beach, Jay gets a phone call from Gabby that Evan is dead from an apparent suicide attempt. However when Jay arrives, he finds the circumstances surrounding Evan's death now seem to point to medical negligence and possible murder. In the latest suspense novel, Eyes Wide Open by Andrew Gross, a doctor soon finds himself in the middle of something he never dreamed he would and will test his ability as both a brother and as a husband. Drawing on two real life experiences from his own past, Gross has crafted a richly personal, yet utterly terrifying tale of two brothers, one successful, one wayward, trying to bridge the gap of what tore them apart. I received this book compliments of William Morrow, a division of Harper Collins Publishers for my honest review. This book is a crime, suspense thriller that will leaving you hanging by a thread til the very end. I would rate this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars just based on the way it holds the readers interest all the way through the book. I was hoping for a bit more suspense but was not disappointed in the way the story was told and can't wait for the sequel on this one!!!
