This book was more difficult to get into than either Elantris or the Mistborn Trilogy. The beginning(s) had me in a bit of a jumble and the many many kinds of spren (anticipationspren, fearspren, gloryspren, painspren...) felt somehow random rather than an integral part of the world. Luckily, I was quite willing to give Sanderson time to create his world and characters. By the time I was through the first couple of their chapters, Kaladin, Dalinar, and Shallan had me hooked. The world...well, I'm still trying to get a handle on it. Where the laws of the magic in Mistborn used some basics of the laws of physics, the magic in The Stormlight Archive seems to delight in defying the laws of physics...maybe. There is enough in hinted at in Kings to give a shadowy sketch of what the larger picture may be. There is certainly a kind of charm to the strangeness of this world. ;) I really did enjoy The Way of Kings once I got into it. I would recommend it to anyone who has read and liked other books by Brandon Sanderson, but I'm on the fence as to whether I'd have it be someone's introduction to his writing. (Which just means that between now and the release of the next book in the series, I'll just have to get my friends to read Mistborn so I can hook them on this as well.)

This is definitely one series that I'll be following from now on (:

It's small, light and very readable. I hesitate to say that I 'enjoyed' the book, but I'm very pleased I read it. It's given me a much better understanding of the child-bride problem and why it's so hard to solve.

Martha Grimes has gotten too "preachy" in her last couple of books. This one goes overboard about animal rights. My other criticism is that Andi Oliver is a little too good to be true. She is beautiful and everyone falls in love with her.

I had high hopes at the beginning of this book. There were many things I loved, especially the times the book points out how our biology is better suited to scarce calories and abundant movement than it is to our modern lifestyle. This book goes into specifics about why biology favored things like weight plateaus and metabolic efficiency even though they frustrate our attempts to attain and maintain a healthy weight now. There are also specific suggestions of how to turn those obstacles into opportunities. I also like the generally upbeat and positive tone of this book. I had hoped, in fact, that it would be my new book of choice to recommend to people because my current top choice, the books by Judith Beck, are much less fun and affirming. However, I found the book as a whole overwhelming even though I’m doing ninety percent of what is suggested. I’m just not sure it would have been helpful to me a couple of years ago when I was floundering at about the twenty percent mark. I also disagreed with some of the suggestions in the book, particularly some of the processed foods that it mentioned and the advice on handling cravings. But, as in all things, your mileage may vary and this could indeed be a helpful book for many who are confused by conflicting nutritional advice and looking for one authoritative source.

In August 1990, when I was 16, I went to New York on my own. It was possibly the most awesome five days of my life and one of the only reasons I read this book was because it takes place during two sweaty August weeks in NYC. It's an Ok little story though, and has hot rock bands in it :)

I would read this to younger elementary students (prek~1st grade). It does not really have a plot but I would use it to do a lesson sequence, or re-telling the story. The book is rather simple; it would also be a fun lesson to do on different types of animals.

"Forty-one years after I died, my friend Dale returned to the farm where I was murdered. It was a very bad winter." A very good opening line of a well written tale, Simmons uses a technique that is developed in full in Drood--keep on your alert while reading. While not really a sequel, it would help to have read A Summer of Night before reading A Winter Haunting. If you haven't, some of the references and the setting may not make sense.

** spoiler alert ** I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and, like it's predecessor, a page turner. The only down things I saw in this book were Sam was whiny and annoying, and I found the suspense that was built slightly broken by the swapping between characters. The first book was solidly on one character and had more of a fluid sense. This certainly didn't detract enough from the book to knock a star of by any means. Since I blocked this with the spoiler alert I have to add that I really enjoyed the interaction between Mogget and The Disreputable Dog, I had been looking forward to their meeting since the fog first entered and I wasn't disappointed at all. One last downside, this book is DEFINITELY a bridge book. It ended so abruptly that I actually checked to make sure there weren't a few pages stuck together at the end. I can, however, accept that due to the fact that the last book must dive right in to the action without any set-up and bringing all the characters together from the previous two books will, i'm sure, be impressive.
