I really enjoyed this book. I picked up at work on Saturday and finished it Sunday afternoon. Dan Savage, though a touch sloppy sometimes with his prose, is very readable and entertaining and I enjoyed his account of the open adoption experience. As he does in his advice column, Savage does not hold back on his fears, insecurities and concerns as a gay man embroiled in the very invasive, emotionally taxing process of adoption. I found it refreshing to read such an honest book about the perils and pleasures of starting a family.
Bad things happen to smart people. He thinks his way out of his horrific sudden health problem. Instead of thinking of the end of the world - he thinks of new beginnings. I learned a lot.
Wow. The human brain is remarkable. And life can change in an instant.

One of the best set of Superman stories I've read. Balances the character just right.
Good read--The tone and pacing remind me of "The Passage." It makes me want to see the movie--although it has to be very different.
funny as hell... or heaven?
When I first heard about this novel, I was intrigued. A teenage girl raped and murdered tells her story from beyond the grave. I could get into that. But I don't get it. Maybe it's the sexuality-obsessed part of me speaking, but something as traumatic as a rape isn't really glossing-over material. The narrator tells a detailed and nuanced story full of insightful metaphor and thoughtful musings. It's light and pretty in the face of grim subject matter and the sorrow of missed opportunity. But it reads almost too light, too wonderous and amazed at her predicament. Perhaps it comes from her distance from the event. The narrative seems to start at the time, the present of the end of the novel. That could make the measured reactions and removed emotions at least understandable by then. But the grief that protagonist Susie professes feels incomplete and as such makes the entire work ring sentimental and a little false. I wanted to like this a lot more than I did, but it was very readable and made for an interesting, though eerie, bedtime book.
