"It sounds like Henry James called everyone beautiful and marvellous," said Sam, a little sourly, "from what you say." Oh, beautiful, magnificent... wonderful. I supposed it's really more what the characters calls each other, especially when they're being wicked. in the later books, you know, they do it more and more, when actually, they're more and more ugly -- in a moral sense." "Right..."; said Simon. "The worse they are the more they see beauty in each other." "Interesting," said Howard drily. Nick cast a fond glance at his little audience. 'There's a marvellous bit in his play 'The high bid,' when a man says to the butler in a country house, 'I mean, to whom do you beautifully b e l o n g?" [...] So he prattled on, mixing up sex and scholarship, and enjoying his wanderings away from the strict truth. In fact, that was really the fun of it. And it seemed to fit in with the air of fantasy in the Ogee office, the distant sense of an avoided issue." (183) Lurid and perfect... and i'm only about 2/3s through :) 2011: it's a midwestern tradition to read this book, practically. The bar scene where he recognizes Leo is perfect -- as sad as Wharton and careful as HJ.

I wanted to love this book, but the female leads were too incredibly out of period.

Easy but fascinating read. The letters format really makes it a different way to experience the post WWII period in the island of Guernsey.

A well-executed British mystery, but nothing more. Hampered by the constraints of this genre, which may be why the Booker Prize-winning author used a pseudonym.

I loved this book. I initially began reading it to see if the content was appropriate for my 6-year. It's a timeless story that's enjoyable for young and old alike. I think it's destined to become a classic.

The second novel in the Harry Potter saga begins with one of the most irritating characters ever written. Whenever I read this book, I want to whallop Dobby. Don't get me wrong, I love him in later books, but in this one he really buggs me! But, other than that, this book holds true to all of J.K. Rowling's novels thus far: the more recently they were written, the better they are. In other words, the more Harry Potter you read, the more you get sucked into her fantastical world of witches, wizards, and mystical creatures. Anyone who says this is a rip off of the Lord of the Rings books is off their rocker! If you think this is true, then all books are rip offs of all other books in the world! It just goes too far! Yup, well, that's my "review!" Enjoy.

St is Colorado during the internment of the Japanese during WWII. It is the story of a family and their relationship with the camp. It makes both sides real and believable. How did we allow this to happen???

Disappointing. And it wasn't until months after I finished it that I realized the first line was a Biblical reference.
