What a book! This is a story about the origins of punk, told by the originators themselves, and if what they have to say is sometimes shallow, inane or offensive, well that's oral history for you. So many gory, crazy, absolutely tragic stories! You don't have to be a punk rock fan to enjoy this, although I am, but you probably want to have at least a passing interest in rock music history. And the mystery of how Iggy Pop is still alive when so many lesser transgressors didn't make it to middle age will have me pondering the mysteries of life for days...

Although the story was interesting, it needed to be told as a magazine article and not a book. There just wasn't enough story to fill a whole book. It was extremely redundant and slow moving. The main point of the story was what prompted me to read it - what happens when an infertility clinic mixes up frozen embryos and gives them to the wrong parents. How should everyone respond? What moral/ethical obligation does the receiving family have to preserve the life of the implanted embryo who is not their biological child? What rights do the biological parents have? Fortunately for this family, their story ends well. And while I applaud them for trying to address the ethical issues their story highlights, I think they could have done even more in this regard. They seem to advocate in vitro fertilization, even though they know it raises huge ethical issues, such as what to do with frozen embryos the parents don't want to use, how many eggs to fertilize, what makes a "viable" embryo, etc. I find it hard to believe that the authors can still advocate for IVF, even after all they've been through and what they learned. I also find it a bit shameful that they didn't better educate themselves about the process and their choices before they moved ahead. I think that's one of the clear dilemmas of IVF, that parents so eager to have children may make uninformed decisions, and infertility clinics aren't always diligent to help parents understand their choices and risk losing clients in the process.
dude, lester bangs is probably one of the most interesting music critics ever. he lived the rock star lifestyle, but lacked the status. either way, his stream-of-conciousness reviews that would sometimes talk about nearly everything except the album are almost always entertaining and always include genuine rock n roll philosophy.

Another dirty Irvine Welsh novel that follows the lives of four boys who grow up "thegither" in Edinburgh. Hilarious and harsh like most of his work, but weaves a great story of these men's lives intertwining here and there, ruining and helping each other at the same time. Mark Renton and our dear Begbie from Trainspotting even make brief appearances.

Fun, but written by a criminal whose main objective was to make the Arthurian legends a decidedly french story. Lancelot was entirely fictional, a french knight whose stories were aimed at inflating the french ego, (how coulg Gawain, an englishman from the Orkneys, be the greatest knight in the world?) However, Mallory provided some of the earliest tales and has drawn the picture of what the Arthurian legends have become in modern culture. Despite the impossibilities of historical accuracy, (as far as we know, Arthur MAY have lived, just not like that) Mallory is always a good read.

This is one of the most moving books i've ever read. I found the mental mind of Charlie a very thought proviking place to be, learning adulthood - the hard way - he experiences so many new things. He discovers on his journey, love, intelligence and ego. And those three are his downfall. The his adolescent mind cannot keep up with his IQ and he finds himself having many unusual feelings for women throughout the book - feelings that were beaten out of him as a child by his mother; driven to insanity with the idea that charlie might harm his little sister. His life drew me to tears and I don't think I'll be able to ever face the book again.
Interesting read. Basically IQ isn't everything, and practice makes perfect (or at least success).

The 39 Clues books are packed with action and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It's somewhat of a treasure hunt for various artifacts from different periods of time. The characters are moderately well developed and interesting, albeit a little stereotypical. (Wise old man, Russian assassin, etc.) Probably the most likable character would have to be Dan. Anyway it's a great read and you should definitely try it out.

Amazingly well-written. Loved the descriptions and felt like I was there with the characters for most of the book.
