What a lyrical, wonderful writer he is. Had never read this one and it is now up there in my favourites! The depths of human psychology, family history (including his own) and the history of Salinas Valley from Civil War to the end of WWI. I was sad to finish it!

Hands down my favorite entry of the Martin series so far. It is nearly impossible to speak about this piece without spoilers but there are so many aspects here that will hit you like a ton of bricks. Martin proves to be sadistic towards his readers in many ways, most notably how he builds up certain story lines to make the reader feel that it simply cant get any worse for this character and then it does. At many times I wanted to throw my nook through the window however this tactic only caused me to immediately pick up the book again with the hopes that at some point it has to get better...right? Martin in many ways crafts his art in the same manner as ancient Greek and Roman mythology where as he uses the simple formula of establishing a hero and beats him/her down to their weakest lowest point in order to build them up in order to achieve kleos or glory. At times he allows this to happen, in others he is unmerciful to his hero and like a greek god, builds fortifications of many sorts to prevent of delay this from happening. I find myself truly exhausted after completing this in marathon fashion due to my addiction and dedication that I realized I had to finishing this one. I havent enjoyed reading a book like I have with Storm of Swords in a very long time.

2014: This might be the first book I've re-read without realizing that it's a re-read. Upon perusing my 2011 review, I can see that this book made very little impression on me in the first place, and the situation was not improved by a second reading. Knocking this back to two stars for being a sheer disappointment not once, but twice. 2011: Interestingly enough, this is the first L'Amour I've read in which I've was less than pleased with the writing. Everything happens "suddenly." That's fine as a plot device, but the word "suddenly" does not need to be used every time something sudden happens. Other than that, this is as enjoyable as any other L'Amour out there. Perfect comfort escapist weekend reading, and short enough to be read in one or two sittings. (Three-star review)

This is the first of a series which my mother-in-law (who owns a corgi) recommended to me. The premise is stale. The writing is fair. The author does capture the character of the breed in a humorous way. I enjoyed it because I recognized my mother-in-law's dog in it. If I were not a dog fan, there would be no reason for me to read this book.

Every class has that one student who seems to always fall asleep in class or who doesn't seem to get enough sleep at home. Share this book with students to open a conversation about why bedtimes are important and what makes bedtime special for them.

Terry Pratchett has a rare talent for satirising the modern Western world which has drawn comparisons in some quarters to P.G. Wodehouse. Fans will acknowledge, I'm sure, that his story-telling has improved over time and he's at his best when exploring scientific and philosophical theories, by placing them into his fantasy world. Soul Music is a book in which Pratchett has learnt about structure (compared to his earlier novels), so it's a very accessible book. At times, it hints at the exploration of theories, as outlined above, by suggesting itself as the biography of a meme. Ultimately, however, it falls somewhat short of that by incorporating just about every joke ever made about the music industry in a way that does the author's undoubted talent little justice. The music industry is an obvious choice for satirisists and many books and films have been made with that focus. Some of them are very good. By the end of this book, it felt most like a homage to those others than an original piece of writing.

Pretty disappointing, especially given that I'm a huge fan of Robbins' fiction. Waste of time. I didn't even finish it.

Don't exactly remember when I read this, but I remember how awesome it was and it was a page-turner. There are a few kid-heroes and a wizard or two.
