A fun Toddler Time book IF the kids are up for a noisy one. If not it bombs.

Juicy details of the life of a neglected, wealthy, smart, addicted, heiress. There's NY, there's London, there's even a romance with a Weinstein (don't panic, it's not graphic).

Disappointing ending, but life is sometimes disappointing, too.

I just read Libba Bray's Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy, and somehow that inspired me to pick up Middlemarch again. I think I wanted to read something authentically English, and to get a realistic view of a woman's life in 1800s England. I like that Middlemarch begins, rather than ends, with a wedding, and then portrays the marriage that follows. If anyone has any suggestions of more books on this theme, please let me know. Oh well, I didn't get through it before it was due back to the library. This is the kind of book that I have to read in a week while on vacation. I couldn't sustain my interest by reading an hour on the train in the mornings. If it was just Dorthea, I could have read that, but when I got to the scene where her uncle was giving his political speech I just drifted away. Maybe one day someone will write the modern version of Dorthea and her awful first husband, and then I can read that.
This book is the cure to apathy. Paul Farmer is basically my role model and I agreed whole-heartedly with everything in this book, except for one little sentence about Haitian superstition developing because of a lack of biomedicine which I think is ethnocentric, but other than that this is my professional bible if you will.

a wonderfully evocative poet. keeping in mind the fact that i am generally uninterested in poetry and notoriously hard to please where poetry is concerned, i was deeply impressed by these poems.
clearly a classic and deserving of that status. still, i didn't "like" it. i read it with interest and was impressed by it as writing. but it was so bleak and flat. you should read it because it is worth studying... but it left me feeling alone and emotionless.

It is difficult to know how to judge this poetry knowing that it was written by a 9-year-old. If she were an adult, published poet I would say that it was childish but it is certainly as good as any poetry written by a child. According to WorldCat, four major libraries have placed it in their collections; The New York Public Library, Harvard, Brown University and the University of Virginia.

I read this when I was a teenager myself. It's a haunting memoir and well worth reading.
