In his trademark style, Deepak Chopra masterfully explores the massive creative powers of the human mind, and offers cosmic principles by which to harness and activate habitual dominant disciplined thought to attract abundance in all areas of one's life.

I LOVED this book. First of all, enough action happens to satisfy even the most impatient of readers. Seriously, every few pages something exciting occurs. I also liked the character of Thom Creed; he makes plenty of mistakes, and gets angry just like your average human does. I liked how Moore gives Thom conflict (superhero and gay, both things his dad hates), but doesn't let either one overwhelm the story. Yes, Thom is gay but the whole book doesn't center on him struggling with it. The superhero problem dominates a bit more, but he seems like a normal teenager at the same time. I also liked the large number of secondary characters that Thom interacts with, many of which had little stories of their own (except for Typhoid Larry, who somehow got missed). After all, in life you are the center of your own story, and you talk to lots of people throughout the day--there aren't just one or two other people you see. Near the end of the book there were a few corny moments, and some cheesy superhero stuff (like the Planet Eater, or the fact that one superhero is from outer space), but these were relatively minor things. I highly recommend Hero; it should be getting a 4.5 if I could just put 1/2 stars up there!

Onthe plus side, Pearson so perfectly captures that pre-adolescent celebrity crush. Mine was also on a Cassidy, but the younger one, which is a little embarrassing. (Though I did have a pair of jeans with a tag that said "Property of David Cassidy.") I really related to her protagonist early on. And then I got tired of it--and it went on and on and on. And then once the novel moved to the character's adult life, it was a little predictable and slight. Overall, not a significant book, though fairly pleasant and nicely nostalgic. But wow, did she really nail the way I felt when I was twelve.

To be fair, I read this on the plane to Hawaii for my honeymoon. There is probably not a book on Earth that can stand up to that kind of pressure/distraction. It was good, but I never really got lost in it. It's basically the story of a woman in an English village during the Black Plague. The people of the village, led by the vicar, choose to isolate themselves in an attempt to spare the people in the surrounding villages. Very noble, right? But of course it's never that easy or cut-and-dried. The book was okay, but I do have to say that the ending did surprise me, and that's always a good thing.

Ok, so for ages I had heard there was a Judy Blume book in which a boy has a penis called Ralph, but I didn't know the title. After never stumbling across it, I sorta forget and considered it an urban legend or something - until one glorious day. I picked up Forever at an op shop in Orewa, and was reading it on the bus home when I read "Katherine, I'd like you to meet someone. This is Ralph", or whatever the line is. I was so excited I gasped and tore the book in half (the spine was really brittle)! I wish I had found it when I was 12. I would've been obsessed with the dirty bits.
