I...couldn't get through this book, and read only about 3/4 of it. I honestly had high hopes for it...it seemed dark, quirky, and importantly different(ish) from what I normally read. Unfortunately, it read like it was geared towards middle-schoolers (i've not read "Twilight" or whatever...but that name/impression lingered in my head as I read "The Sonambulist"). The quirkiness of the characters seemed very forced, and the "steam-punkiness" of the whole thing seemed a bit old...fun in some parts, but hackneyed in others. And to the reviewer who likened it to the work of Gabriel Garcia-Marquez (on the back cover): huh?

I started it yesterday, and I'm plowing through it. Very readable scifi-mystery. The series appears to be worth the hype.

Story of a former demon hunter, now married and doing the Mom thing, until suddenly a demon appears at her house just before an important dinner party. This book was really funny. And every time I've tried to tell people that, they get stuck on the whole demon hunting thing. It's not a demon book, it's a funny book.

I loved this book. It covered the time span between the mid 1940's to the 1990's and was set in the a small Midwest town called Elmwood Springs, Missouri. The storyline centers around the Smith family: Doc Smith who runs a pharmacy, his daughter--Anna Lee, Bobby--his younger son and his indomitable wife--Dorothy who broadcasts "Good Neighbor, Dorothy" over the radio station from her own living room. Much of her broadcasts are delightfully chronicled in the book as she reads charming letters that have been sent, announces winners of some highly entertaining contests, entertains guest speakers and singers, and advertises her sponsors products with an earnestness that makes listeners clamoring for them. Many other colorful local characters are drawn into Fannie Flagg's great story. The books includes a lot of humor, a little sadness, romance, a bit of a mystery, and a lot of heart. I highly recommend it!

I was really enjoying this book until about half way through. Until that point, there is magic and adventure and death and all those things that seemed interesting to me as a child. But then it swerves into a love story, and I can never be objective about love stories in kids/YA lit: I think they're kind of ridiculous and more than a little boring. There is also such a long ending that just seems to be gearing up for a sequel. Like Lord of the Rings. End it already. This was another Children's Literature Book Club pick, another one with a horrible, terrible cover that turned out to be far less painful than I thought it would be.
I read this ages ago but I remember enjoying it. It looks at how a group of students from MIT are able to figure out how to win big at the casinos. It is cool b/c it is a true story.
