I'm sort of unfairly shelving this as ACS book club, although it's not the same book group (I think we would choose better). I also feel a little like I shouldn't even rate the book because I'm clearly not the target audience - not in terms of demographics, but the fact that I don't read romance books, and unfortunately this book proved why. I would like to think that there are better examples of the genre than this: the writing is terrible (using "whatever" as a full sentence in narration should be outlawed even in most YA literature and definitely in adult-targeted books), the characters are shallow and undeveloped, and the plot essentially nonexistent. Even the "steamy" scenes just end up being laughable because it makes no sense how the characters got there. Oh well - it killed 2 hours on a plane.

Anita Diamant combines two of my favorite things in this triumphant novel: Jewish culture and beautifully-written prose. The history of the nation of Israel is the backdrop to each of the female protagonists' individual and collective emergence into womanhood-after surviving the nightmare of the Holocaust. I highly recommend this book!

The author is clearly a talented writer. What she needs to find is an more talented editor. The beginning of the book is so heavily laden with overenthusiastic description I couldn't imagine pushing through the 500 page tome. However, once you get through Part 1, things improve. The book also flows somewhat like a Harry Potter novel actually, in that it's paced against a year at school, with the beginning laying the social groundwork for the riveting ending. It's both a coming-of-age novel and a mystery rolled into one. By the end of the book, I couldn't put it down, despite the "You've got to be kidding me" cynic inside me nagging and chiding me for being completely drawn in by the completely over-the-top ending. It hooked me, and after part 1, there are lots of surprises. Plus, it is littered with some beautifully turned aphorisms, great dialogue, and a hilariously full-disclosure contrivance of a mini-mart clerk. Thus it gets four stars. In the end though, I don't believe I ever thought the clues given and mysteries hinted at could ever have unrolled into the utterly complex premise revealed by the end. If you read it, just be patient.

reminds me how I should read "Smila's sense of snow" again. ALos glad I own this because I will have to listen to it again for sure to catch his great writing!! Makes me wish I knew more about music too.
Nikki ticked me off. I get that what she went through way intense and has scarred her, but come on! She wants to cling to the pain and shelter herself from everything so she becomes cynical and frankly kind of bitchy for no reason to people who don't deserve it. If you absolutely don't want to get hurt you might as well lock yourself at home in isolation, although even that isn't a guarantee. Luis was different from his brothers since he has ambition and a plan for his life. Unfortunately for him, everything changes and he has to deal with some pretty sobering facts. He reacts badly at first, but he's kind of justified if a little extreme. It was fun seeing the two elder Fuentes brothers and how their lives progressed after the first two books. Their loyalty to their family is one thing that hasn't changed, even if their family did. A favorite secondary character of mine is the chemistry teacher, a firm believer of tough love! An emotional series that deals with hard realities and truths, but gives hope for a better future. Love rules and all that.
I have read a lot of books on war, but never one from the point of view of the generals. Good stuff.

A must read for someone who's interested in the art of sales. Opens your eyes on how techniques we see everyday actually works.
Very few books are both smart and easy (even a little silly at time. This combination of chick lit and historical romance fit the bill!
