Ugh. I DETEST books with non-stop whining from the protagonists. That's precisely what this is. It's like Twilight without the vampires and high school. This could have been a really interesting book. Instead, I wasted my reading time wanting to slap the crap out of a fictional character for the entirety of a novel.

Quite possibly one of the best books I have read. You may think you have figured it out halfway through and maybe you have, but there is so much more to it. The characters are easy to follow. The story is intense. I hope all this authors books are this good. I will read more by him.

Someone recommended this book to me as I was about to head off on my first 5-month sabbatical and, just as she suspected, I really enjoyed reading about Gilbert's "sabbatical," and her pursuit of pleasure, devotion, and balance. She is a wonderful story-teller and had me chuckling from the get-go. I especially appreciated the reminder that "God dwells within you, AS you." And the call to be both more prayerful and more playful. I'll definitely be re-reading this one - RICH with Sermon Fodder.

** spoiler alert ** I read this one a few years ago, and I liked it, but I had a hard time with all of the letter writing. Having just read Bram Stoker's "Dracula," I better understand why "The Historian" was written the way it was written. But I love the other reviewers who have pointed out that Dracula as a librarian isn't all that exciting.
