What a surprising book. A classic space opera. A mix of old and new. Fun and entertaining with heart. Humorous and touching. Highly recommended even if you don't usually read science fiction. It's more about being human and aging than space exploration and battles.

Shouldn't be listed as fiction. I think it's the perfect handbook for life, if you know how to read it. Read through many many many times and often read excerpts for most of my life.

great book!!!!!!!!!! She´s my favorite author.
While I read this book some years ago I do remember crying during one chapter, and thats always a good sign.
I could not put this book down.
If you like Albino Tigers, four eyed British boys with capes, and David Blain, you are getting ahead of yourself my dear voodoophile. In this longwinded tail you will spend many pages with scholarly rapscallions whose employment of magic is preceded by hours of debate that would make members of today's parliament feel factitious. If you do get around to reading this word-monster, word on the street is that Johnny Depp is in talks to play the Raven King. I feel like casting anyone other than Macaulay Culkin would be a great injustice to Susanna Clarke's flamboyant epic.

It took me a little while to settle in to this book. The beginning for me was slow (so much setup!) although after seeing it through to the end, I understand why the author did what she did with the beginning. We meet Andras as he's departing Hungary to study architecture in France. A chance meeting sets him on the path to meet Klara and their stories become intertwined as we see them go through the atrocities of war. We meet Andras and Klara years before the war begins, which allows us to see how drastically their lives are altered by the course of the war and the aftermath. I did feel that events at the end of the novel were rushed (to get through certain years), especially compared to the slower pace of the beginning. This novel offered a new perspective for me on WWII as I didn't have any knowledge of the impact or events in Hungary. Overall, a great WWII novel.
