A quick, quirky read about 16 yr old Cyd Charisse (NOT the movie star/dancer) trying to figure out what love is and where she fits within her two families. She is the secret love child of Frank- real dad whom she has met once and she has returned home to her "true" parents Sid and Nancy (NOT the rocker and his lover) after some trouble at an elite boarding school. Her best friend and confidant is her ragdoll Gingerbread which she is not prepared to give up, reagardless that everyone thinks she is "too old for dolls." Some poignant moments, fun characters and amusing pop culture references (including the 80's movie "Heathers"). My only criticism might be that some of the laguage felt a bit contrived; it seemed the author was channeling Francesca Lia Block via her Weetzie Bat series, with much less success. Here is a sampling; "My so called parents hate my boyfriend, Shrimp. I'm not sure they even believe he is my boyfriend. They take one look at his five-foot-five, surfer-shirt-wearin', baggy-jeans-slouchin', Pop Tart-eatin', spiked-hair-self and you can see confusion firebombs explodining in their heads, like they are thinking, Oh no, Cyd Charisse, that young man is not your homes. Dig this: He is." All in all, an intesting little YA book.

I was not expecting/prepared for the style. Spoiler alert, it's all letters back and forth to various characters in the story. No real....prose? That took some getting used to, and I was about ready to say sayonara-life's-too-short-to-read-so-so-books. But then I got sucked into the story, finished it at a super human pace, and am glad I did.

This was one of the cutest children's books I've read in a long time..and the pictures were so beautiful and vivid. I'm definetly going to read the rest in the series!
I wanted to share with you my review of this book that we featured on Daily Cheap Reads when it was offered free a few weeks ago. A Simple Amish Christmas by Vannetta Chapman has the romance and delight of a holiday story, with the crisp, fresh feeling of a visit to Amish country. Annie Weaver has followed the tradition of rumschpringe and moved away from home and the Amish lifestyle as a young woman. Annie used this rebellion period to earn a nursing degree and work in a children’s hospital. As Christmas nears, however, she finds her heart longing for the simple ways of home. When she receives word that her father has been injured in an accident, she returns home to care for him. Annie encounters Samuel, who provides basic medical care to the Amish community. Annie and Samuel immediately clash over the care for her father. But they find themselves coming together to care for the needs of their kin. Annie becomes attracted to Samuel, but her complicated feelings for the widower make Christmas not so simple. This full-length story presents characters that are impossible to resist. Annie was especially engaging as she tried to help her people with her medical skills, while also respecting their traditions.
Awesome book. Loved every page of it. Didn't want to put it down; but I did, only when I absolutely had to. Loved the humor and craziness of it. The events seemed so unreal, but the fact that it was true made it that much more interesting.

he's almost as funny in print as on the radio, and I swear I can hear his slightly-lispy hint of a Canadian accent while I'm reading...
