Beard, Mary. THE FIRES OF VESUVIUS: Pompeii Lost and Found. (2008). ****1/2. I’ve been to Pompeii twice, and not seen at least half of what this author discusses in this book. Wouldn’t it be great to have her as a guide, though it might take a few days to make it through. This is more than a retelling of the eruption of Vesuvius and the subsequent destruction of Pompeii. It is a retelling and an interpretation of what the ruins and various artifacts tell us about the people who lived there. Apparently, Pompeii was a fairly old city at the time of the eruption; the author claims it was a city in the 7th Century BC. It was not a resort town for the Romans, as guides there would have you believe, but an agrarian community and a manufacturing town. We believe that it was founded by the Etruscans, since samples of their language survive on the walls. It was also a fishing town. It was known throughout the Roman Empire for its garum, a fairly disgusting paste made from ground fish that was allowed to ferment. Romans used this paste as a flavoring and food additive, and Pompeii made the best. They were also known for their wines. The town was a polyglot community and polytheistic. There is even evidence of influences of Egyptian gods. There is a Temple of Isis. Apulius in his work, “The Golden Ass,” mentions Pompeii and Isis. The author has a Chair of Classics at Cambridge, and a list of previously published works that include other explorations into ancient ruins. She divides the book up into sections that explore various aspects of Pompeiian life: Street Life, House and Home, Painting and Decorating, Earning a Living, The Pleasures of the Body, etc. Her presentation, though scholarly, reads more like a popular history, and contains hundreds of pictures and diagrams to help us follow her text. If you read only one book on Pompeii, it should be this one. Recommended.
