Charley Davidson has been able to see dead people since the day she was born. When they seek her out, she tries to convince them to go into the light. Often, they have unfinished business that they would like her to help with first–sometimes it’s passing along a message to loved ones–and sometimes it’s bringing bad guys to justice. Before her dad retired from the police force, she helped him solve a few cases–now, she helps her uncle do the same. When the ghosts of three murdered lawyers ask for her help, she agrees. While she tries to solve the mystery of their murders, she also finds herself trying to solve a more personal mystery–she suspects that the leading man who’s been starring in her dreams every night for the past month is more than a figment of her imagination–and, as it turns out, he is. Much more. The basic storyline is solid. Charley’s interactions with the deceased are well-written; her scenes with the mysterious dream lover are HOT. Angel and Rocket are interesting characters–I hope that we get to know them better as the series progresses. I also hope that we get to know Mr. Wong. The story falters a bit when it comes to Charley’s interactions with living people–I love snark but I think Jones played up Charley’s sarcastic humor a bit too much–she was all snark, all the time, regardless of the seriousness of the moment. The constant snark lessened the emotional potential of some key scenes and made Charley seem more like a caricature, less like a fully developed character. Some emotional punch was also lost by the choice to refer to, but avoid talking about, Charley’s past on several occasions–we knew enough that the reveals simply didn’t have much power by the time we received them. The love triangle can also use a bit of work. I’m going to ignore the first meeting of Charley and Reyes because the scene has already been written and the damage has already been done–his treatment of her in that encounter doesn’t jive with any kind of “romance” I’m interested in–it’s one scene though so I’m going to pretend it doesn’t exist. I also didn’t really care for his “who cares if we have an audience” attitude. Those scenes aside, there’s definitely some chemistry between the two of them. Charley and Garrett Swopes on the other hand . . . there’s friction, which is good. What isn’t so good is the “banter” between them–sexual innuendo can be hot but it requires a certain rapport between the characters which is missing at this point. I thought most of Swope’s comments were simply crude, particularly since he seemed to jump from scoffing at her abilities to commenting on her “assets”. I don’t care how sexy he is, this is not a turn on. Although it’s a paranormal romance, fans of Stephanie Plum and Izzy Spellman may want to give this series a try. There are a few flaws, but there’s potential–I’m planning to read Second Grave on the Left soon. And if the makeup Charley uses actually exists, Jones needs to share the details–Charley was black and blue for practically the entire book and men were still drooling over her!
