I agree that this genre is disturbing because it doesn't represent those veterans who stay. In fact, when I read it, I hadn't yet started my stint in the inner city school where I taught for --you got it--2 years. I read the last chapter on a train, standing up and crying. I felt the teacher was both who we wanted to be and who we could never be. I liked the idea that this was not a self-serving autobiography--the fact that a NYTimes journalist followed the teacher for a year gave it more credibility. I wonder how I would feel about the book now. But, I hold it in my mind, many years later as a favorite.

Going into this book, I was kinda exited. New paranormal book? Yes, please! However, once I started reading it, i just couldnt decide whether I truely liked it enough or not. Beginning started off sort of slow. Understandable, with it being the first book in a future series. Then as things progressed, I started ot enjoy it more. But as I got half way through I started to lose interest. I started to try to find loop holes and theories and just generalizations that didn't quite fit. In all honesty, the book is decent enough. It has theories and future directions that are just waiting to be explored. The character development is there, but does lack some depth in my opinion. Emerson was a bit too helpless (naive?) for my tastes. Again though, this is understandable, but she just lacks that something to have my full sympathy/ support/ whatever. I think I liked Kaleb the most (of all characters.) He seems just seems more intresting.

interesting and creepy but a bit overdone. I did like the fact that he told everyone what he was doing and nobody took him seriously. that was kinda cool.

This is a Bookclub selection for April. We'll read it and then actually get to meet the author! *update* I finished this book a few days after meeting the author. During our meeting, she discussed her inspiration for the story, and general writing concepts such as naming characters and picking locations. I finished the book during my lunch hour and was pretty pleased with the book. I think having met the author influenced my opinion of the book for sure, but I did appreciate the style in which it was written, and the lessons it taught. I may consider reading other books of hers, but for now my plate is full!

I bought this for Emma Holly's demon world story. I love the demon world series from Ms. Holly. It's sexy and so erotic. I do like Mary Janice Davidson, but all her stories are starting to run into one another. Still this was a decent anthology to read.
