The tragedy of the 20th Century, World War One, is rendered in its most untouched form. This is the first important war novel, the one that told the truth, that's all. The absolute naiveté of the narrator is aggravating to tears. How could they have done this? You ask why the Lost Generation was lost? Remarque says why: "We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces."
Absolutely amazing this was written 30+ years ago, a sad testament that things are not slowly getting better, more open, etc. Currently using in my ch lit class.

So another guilty pleasure of mine is this fantastic book. Although the book is a bit long and some parts of it seem to drag, there are some really amusing scenes, several unforgettable characters, and many deeply profound themes that serve as an excellent introduction to such things as ethics in politics, friendship, loyalty, etc.
Truly amazing...
I just found this annoying rather than entertaining. Maybe it was just too much at once...I listened to it on CD on a car trip, and I might have liked it better if I read it a few chapters at a time. I did like the movie, though.

A little obscure, but really interesting. One of the few books I've read for class that Emily has stolen from me to read. (That's a comment on the quality of this book, not on the quality of my wife).

Very charming and Romantic (notice the capital R) book. I liked the choice of narrator and structure. I couldn't tell if this was a love letter to Sebastian, Julia, or the house - but either way there is something very nostalgic about the book.

I enjoy the writing of P. D. James. The setting of this book is an island off the coast of Cornwall. Ms. James uses words best when she sets the mood of the location. Her words to describe this isolated island was the best reason to read this book. It is a mystery, and as usual with this author, she doesn't disapoint in that area either.

Once upon a time a book club I belonged to chose this as the selection of the month. There were 6 of us and as we met to discuss the book we all realized that we were skirting around the issue that none of us (or maybe just one) had actually finished the book. It was hilarious, after 15 minutes of everyone pretending that they had read the whole thing, to realize that nobody had any idea what actually happened. The main character is so disgusting and unlikeable that it was impossible to get through the book. I love New Orleans, and am interested in anything related to it, otherwise I would have put this book down a lot sooner than I did.

This book broke my heart. I fell in love with the characters and really mourned the loss for the husband and dog throughout. I think this is a really great quick read that will make you reflect on your own relationships with loved ones. Charming, sad, very interesting story.
