This book deserves 5 stars. The characters are richly described and the plot has some good twists and turns. I loved Kiki, the matriarch of the Belsey family with her warmness and generous heart. If she was a real person then I would definitely want to be in her circle of friends! The book is a homage to EM Forster`s Howard`s End which I am yet to read.

Bizarre book! Very repetitive and not very enjoyable at all.

I'm in love with Sophie Kinsella's writing style. It's just so magical and funny and clever. It was like Lara and Sadie were real! I loved this book, and i was so sad when it ended, but, unlike many other books out there, the end of this book was just right. Perfect.
Am re-reading this in the wake of DFWs suicide. The first time I read this was pre-grad-school, and I've been curious how I'd see it differently after two years of Real Analysis courses.

Laugh Out Loud Fun! This book is about the Smythe-Smith girls that we have all come to dread and love in the Bridgerton Series. I for one love the Bridgerton Series and was excited to see that Julia Quinn came out with another series that includes the same characters. I think I laughed through the entire book. Plus I have a soft spot for music. Yes, my family is one of those who everyone must learn to play one or two instrument and sing. Now not all can do this well or at all. So reading this brought back memories. I think this book might take place during the same time that Romancing Mr.Bridgerton. I am not positive but I think I remember a violin being stepped on by Lady Danbury in one of the other books. Recommend: All those who loved the Bridgerton Series really should read this book. Likes: *Loved the humor. Julia Quinn has always been witty and I find that Honoria can be just as witty as Penelope. *You get to see the real Smythe-Smith girls and understand that they two(for the most part) know how horrible they sound. But the show must go on. *Marcus can compete with any of the Bridgerton men. His story is just as lovable. He is astranged from his father and spent most of his time with his Best Friend Daniel Smythe-Smith. Therefore we get to see him interact with Honoria from a young age. *One of the highlights for me was when Honoria's ploy to get Gregory Bridgerton to help her back to a house party (via digging a small hole and pretending to trip and sprain an ankle) back fires and Marcus ends up with the sprain. Things I didn't like: *I wanted more of the story of Daniel and why he was exiled. I am pretty sure she will write a book explaining all. *I didn't want it to end. Fav. Quotes: "“No. Haven’t you been listening?” Marcus would always remember that moment. It was to be the first time he would ever be faced with that most vexing of female quirks: the question that had nothing but wrong answers.” " " “I shall have one, too," he told her. "So that you don't feel alone." She tried not to smile. "That is most generous of you." "I am quite certain it is my gentlemanly duty." "To eat cake?" "It is one of the more appealing of my gentlemanly duties," he allowed.” " " “If you do not apologize to Lady Honoria,” Marcus said, his voice so mild as to be terrifying, “I will kill you.” There was a collective gasp, and Daisy faked a swoon, sliding elegantly into Iris, who promptly stepped aside and let her hit the floor. “Oh, come now,” Mr. Grimston said. “Surely it won’t come to pistols at dawn.” “I’m not talking about a duel,” Marcus said. “I mean I will kill you right here.” " " “Honoria had a plan. It had come to her in church that morning. (The ladies went; the gentlemen somehow managed to get out of it.) It wasn’t terribly complicated; she needed only a sunny day, a halfway acceptable sense of direction, and a shovel.” " “Let it be said, Marcus thought dryly, that nothing cooled a man's ardor like the Crusades.” " “Rehearsels, actually." "Rehearsals?" "For the-" Oh,no. "-musicale." The Smythe-Smith musical. It finished off what the Crusades had begun. There wasn't a man alive who could maintain a romantic thought when faced with the memory-or the threat-of a Smythe-Smith musicale.”

total guilty pleasure. bizarre, funny, scary, amazing
This is quite a book. Obama does a great job using his own experiences to segue into broader social commentary. Occasionally the history of his family gets to be a bit much, though; while certainly of personal interest to Obama and maybe to one interested in his life and ancestry, the sheer volume of it sometimes does little to add to the book's larger themes.

Okay, let's be honest--very few people will have an interest in this subject matter. Not many people lose sleep at night wondering about the ecclesiological practices of the Baptist south in the 18th century. If you are interested in this subject, Wills' book is the authoritative source on the subject. Additionally, after reading this interesting addition to America's church history, Wills has some very interesting and informative conclusions that could be developed more and given to a wider audience. I would love for him to add 30-50 more pages fleshing out his conclusion with some implications for church life today.
