This book, was my favorite in the entire series. Most people didn't like it as well. For me it delved into a lot of detail and answered many questions one naturally starts ask, once you start the series.

a really long book, but i went through it quickly. on the surface it is a crime novel / murder mystery (not usually my favorite genre), but really it is so much more-- covers indian history, bollywood culture, politics, religion, family & migration dramas, romance, gang violence, transformation, etc, and weaves together a bunch of different stories. and you pick up some great mumbai slang! (there is a glossary at the back, which is crucial). when i finished, i was exhausted. in a good way!

Where I first discovered Ann Hood. I just love essays - that's why I write them.
This is a great find for a commuting book that will make you laugh outloud and break the morning silence of your neighbors on the subway.

I don't know if I reviewed this before, on the other four books. But I will review it again. I love the whole series, when I started reading it. I loved how different it was, mysterious, sexy and stuff all teenagers relate to in their real life. But I would have liked it if they stopped writing more books after Burned, because I just lost all interest, found all of them really boring and the whole plot a drag. I wonder if they will keep on writing them until for another 10, 20 years or so. For every series, every. You have to keep it short, simple, but exciting. It works well because the readers will be thinking 'oh why didn't they write another book.' but they get over to soon, and have other books to comfort them. It's a book chain.

The book waited on my shelf for months while the movie advanced to the top of my Netflix queue. No longer need to read the book.
One of the things I love most about literature is the suspension of disbelief thing. Honestly. I mean - a book about Nordic god of lying who suddenly decides to work as a paid "dirty work" guy for Christian angels? I am hooked. This book however proved a lot tougher as far as suspension of disbelief goes. It started with the blurb. The blurb actually told me the book was funny. I should have known better then. And after that it only got worse. I mean I did not expect Crime and Punishment. I did not expect Pride and prejudice. All I wanted was something warm, something to laugh about so I could get myself through a particularly nasty cold/flu case. And the book failed miserably. The setup had its potential, which makes it even more sad. I am sorry, but it is not even remotely funny for me. I smiled out of politeness a few times, because I could see how the author was trying, and trying HARD. Well, I thought - maybe the love story proves a bit better. Yet again I failed to suspend my disbelief. I did not expect a deep analysis of complexity of human relationships. All I wanted was a fully predictable happy end with likeable characters to get me through a particularly nasty... Long story short - another failure. I mean this is to be a top-notch lawyer, best of her class, three prizes and full equity partnership in a top firm? How did she even get through law school is beyond me, she is such a crybaby and silly too. She handles media with a complete lack of confidence or intelligence. This from a woman who got to the top of law establishment? I don't buy it. Don't even get me started on likeability thing. Most of the time I just wanted to shake her, she is so annoying, arrogant and well, unintelligent. The male lead is so cliche it hurts even in a book of this kind. And I give it to the author - the ending was fully predictable, just as I expected. The book had its potential to get beyond the superficial kind of chick lit, but it just did not work. The choice Sam makes could be more thoughtful - why should choosing between housekeeping and law be considered antifeminist? Feminism is about CHOICE. Being a housekeeper is a full time job that requires flexibility, planning, diplomacy and practical skill (and I'm not even including cooking). Why should it be looked down upon by lawyers? The perfect lady of the house in 10 rooms mansion could be just as much of a stressed, lonely perfectionist as a top lawyer working 24/7. And so on, and so on. But all that was carefully omitted by author.

I wanted very much to like this book. The summary, the reviews, made it sound like a book I would like; a book about women, getting together and discussing Jane Austen, living their lives and dealing with heartaches in between. Well, I did like it, just not very much. It's well-written, it's amuzing in parts, and I was very fond on the focus on politeness that all the women seemed to share. The focus on appearances and exteriors of kindness. It's not something you see much in books, or anywhere, these days. But the book didn't go deep enough. It's impossible to care deeply for six characters in only 250 pages. I was interested in Prudie, and I really liked Allegra, but the other women were almost caricatures. And the men--even the one man in the book club--are plot devices, romantic foils. Not complete in themselves. I wouldn't recommend this, but if someone were interested in the subject matter, I'd go ahead and tell them to give it a go.
