This one had been on my list for a while - the author had been on either the Colbert Report or the Daily Show, and I made a note to check out the book. I found this one to be well written, good flow, and informative.

Nothing I can say could possibly add to discussion about this book, but I just wanted to say that it is the measure stick that all other fantast stories are measured by. If that isn't enough information to help you than I do not know what will!
The Collected Stories of Joseph Conrad (Ecco Companions) by Joseph Conrad (1996)
a man and his son wage a one-and-a-half man war against two crime families to avenge the murder of their family in the prohibition-era midwest. a great read, but i think they got the pacing better in the movie. and i'll eat my shoe if richard piers rayner didn't actually use paul newman as a model for john looney.

A "classic" book that truly is one. A man is on a remote island with a Dr. performing surgery/vivesection on animals in an attempt to make them human. Yes, not a subtle way to explore what it means to be human or difference between humans and the animal kingdom but very well done. Also, unlike many gothic era stories (ex Dracula) the book is clearly written and a pleasure to read from the start to the end. One idea of the book is that an animal can be cunning but it takes a human to add dishonesty to the mix.
What a sad yet beautiful love story. I actually saw the movie first, and then decided I HAVE TO read the book. Turns out the book was amazing, showing more depth to each character than the movie could possibly provide. I especially wished they put more of Gomez's role into the movie more, since he was also Claire's other choice (but didn't because she loved Henry). The author writes in Claire's or Henry's perspective, providing an overall view of their love story, even though Henry time travels randomly to his important places. The ending is so bittersweet, and it's unlike the movie. Be prepared to feel very involved in these characters (because I did).

entertaining for a while, lack of a plot got to me
I had this one pegged way early on. The author did throw some unexpected twists and turns, but either she was very predictable or I think a lot like she does. It was still entertaining and very well-written, but I do like to be surprised with endings now and then. For that reason, it's only okay.
