Jess, my 8-year old little girl, gave it 3 stars. Comments while reading: 1. "I want to read this book because all the kids in my class have read it." 2. "That's the CHEESE! Don't touch it! Why? Because if you touch it you'll have the 'cheese touch'." 3. "What is the 'cheese touch'? Just read the book!" 4. "He had to tie his fingers together so he won't get the cheese touch. And he got a D in handwriting." 5. "Is it true that if your hand is bigger than your face you have low intelligence?" 6. "What is a dork? Okay. Rawley is so dorky!" 7. "Rodrick is the brother. He's like, a teenager --- that's why he leaves his dirty underwear everywhere." 8. "What's a soprano? Oh, like that Carmen lady?" 9. "I want to buy the real book because I want to be able to write and draw on it. My friends all do it."

Slow to start but so good once I got into it.
I am fortunate to work in a bookstore and had acess to the galley of this book. I had been waiting for this book ever since the author started mentioning it on Facebook. I read it in one sitting yesterday evening; it was that good ! The premise might be off-putting to some. The novel is set in the future where a virus is rampant that makes almost everyone infertile around the age of 18. Therefore teens are being forced or "choose" to become surrogates to provide couples with children and keep the population going. I found this novel extremely well written and despite the future premise, it was relateable the present day. Some of these teens are compensated highly for their "deliveries" while others not so much. It kind of makes you think of the success of shows like "Teen Mom" which pay it's "stars" for their "reality" of being a teenage mother while real-life teen moms struggle to pay the bills and get by. This is entertaining read but will definitely make you think. The cliff-hanger ending sets up for the sequel which I can't wait for.

I LOVED this book!!!
Books depicting urban gay life are a rare thing (see also B-Boy Blues). When I found out about this one, I snatched it up as soon as I could. The characters of B-Boy Blues were 20 somethings, whereas the main character of Breathe was a struggling teen. I don't think I've read a book more poorly written before in my life. With almost no description at all, everyone outside the main character are almost cardboard cutouts. Dialogue pushes a sub-par plot from chapter to chapter. Worst yet was probably the ending, which was as disappointing as it felt unrealistic. By all means, avoid this book.
Eggers' style has matured, and the topic (Sudanese refugee in America) is poignant. He's frustratingly opaque about the rules he's playing with vis a vis the biographical nature of the book, but still, touching and relevant.

First of all, let me just say that I despised each and every character in this book. With the exception of Jared, maybe. Every character is so wrapped up in his/her own problems, he/she can't see past the end of his/her own nose. Claudia-stuck up, snotty, self-involved (I didn't really see a single redeemable characteristic in her, but I dislike any hint of superiority based on class, so it could be my own biases coloring this aspect of the book); Finn-morose, impatient, self-involved; Keiro-cruel, heartless, self-involved-I get the idea that his moral fiber hasn't had the opportunity to show itself, but I'm not sure I care at this point. Keiro is simply MEAN and I can't stand him. I guess Attia isn't all that bad, but for some reason I never feel much about her. So much for the characterization. I guess she did this well, since I had such an emotional response to them. For some odd reason, I couldn't put the book down even though I couldn't stand the characters. I have to admit, that might be a first. Finn has escaped Incarceron, and is supposedly the heir to the throne. Claudia can't stand the idea that Finn can't instantly reconcile himself to losing his oathbrother and Attia in the prison, and doesn't understand his difficulties in being Outside. I really can't stand Claudia. I was sort of hoping she'd disappear. In any case, the story is pretty compelling, if you can get past the characters.

Buku harian yang mengajak untuk kita merenung sisi humanis-spiritual. Enak dibaca, hurufnya sangat ramah untuk usia senja :-) (gede-gede).
