As usual I started with the 2nd book in a series. But that didn't matter, there was no plot crossing between this and book 1. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great characters, funny, hard, sad and foolish. Great sub-plot with the ships cat. Basically just a good old swashbuckling Pirate novel just set in a Sci-Fi universe!

Why I Read this Book: I am absolutely HOOKED on this series. It’s crack. What I Liked: Venom starts off with a bang and just keeps on going. It never fizzles. I just kept turning the page, page after page, anxious to find out how things would pan out. The author has plotted these books out ingeniously. Everything comes together, like a jigsaw puzzle without any leftover pieces. Everything mentioned in the story has its purpose; whether it’s right now in the current book you’re reading or in an upcoming book. Make no mistake about it - there’s a reason for everything. Nothing goes to waste. The entire ensemble of characters are well written. Each one is three-dimensional and comes to life right off the page. I honestly don’t think this series would be as great as it is without the likes of Finn, Sophia, Jo-Jo, and Fletcher being in Gin’s world. The author does a superb job of subtly reminding the reader of past occurrences from previous books in each new book. I tend to forget some of the minor, yet sometimes important, details when reading a series, especially when I do not read the series back to back. But Estep writes little snippets to remind me, in a way that is done quickly, efficiently and effectively so I don’t feel lost. And I greatly appreciate this. What I Didn’t Like: I’m wondering how long Gin is going to put off the inevitable with Bria….? Memorable Moment: “Now that we’re both clean,” I said in a sly tone. “Why don’t we do something dirty?” Overall Impression: Venom was freaking EPIC. The shit comes down and I cannot wait to see what happens next! Best UF series I’ve read to date.

To start with I loved how it was set out as now and then. At first I was beyond confused but after a few chapters everything falls into place and it was an interesting way to read a story. Lena was a much more interesting and likeable character in this book and I liked how she has developed from this brain dead follower of the government in this first book, to a strong independent women who fights for what she believes in. I also liked the new characters, especially Raven and Julian. They were well worked into the story and were woven well into Lena's life to have a big effect on her. The plot in this book was so unexpected but so incredible. Because we were almost reading two stories it meant a double amount of action and sub-plots and it made for an enjoyable story. I didn't at first understand everything with the DFA, but everything that happened with them and underground and the kidnapping; it was a whirlwind of events that just kept getting more intense. This was a fantastic follow-up filled with interesting writing, new characters and an action packed plot full of surprises. Expectations will be surpassed and just wait till you get till the end, trust me it's a cliffhanger to top all cliffhangers.

This was one of my favorites from when I was a kid. Loosely based on history, but a fascinating story of survival. I read this out loud to the kids a couple of years ago and they really enjoyed it. It is very emotional as well.
