Okay...this book was never destined to be a five star read for me. I'm too much of a city girl. I got to the leeches, and bug bites, and no plumbing...and yeah. I know that they were on their island paradise, and I know this was realistic, but ick. This was a M/F/M menage tale of three people who are taking a canoe/camping trip. There is very little talk about what they actually do when they aren't stranded on their own little island. And really...if I were stranded on a deserted island with two hot guys who were willing to share...yeah talking about work would be the last thing on my mind too. Our trio gets lost on their canoe trip, and they are all attracted to each other. Well except the guys. But they understand that two of them hooking up would make the third feel a smidge left out. The trio come together through a magnificent game of Truth or Dare. Once together they all have a ton of island fun, and in the end, actually can't decide if they really want to be rescued, because they don't want to leave the little family they have made for themselves. Umm...did I mention no plumbing? I'd still be jumping up and down to be rescued...hot menage be damned. But hey, that's me. This is a sweet tale, with a happily ever after, and a lot of smokin' sex in between. Not a whole lot of drama other than the whole stranded thing. Most of the struggle was an internal battle inside our trio. "Can we make it work?" "Should I be jealous?" "Should I ask the dude with the combat boots if he saw us getting it on?" This was a feel good book. I really enjoyed it, and will look for more from this author. 3 and 1/2 stars.

This book was absolutely astounding! I'd describe it as reminiscent of William Gibson, but in glorious surround sound and technicolour. Setting the book in India makes it very unusual, and McDonald really manages to get under the skin of the culture. It portrays this future India as a huge melting pot of people, cultures and ideas. One of the very best SF books I have ever read. I'm really looking forward to reading the companion short story collection Cyberabad Days.

Nearly as creepy as World War Z , and more frightening as it's true. The Devil in the White City chronicles both the building of the Chicago Columbian Exposition of 1892 and the serial killer who set up shop next door. Although the book is written like a novel in the pop-history style I so dislike, it's well-sourced, and the tension of the serial killer tale is well-woven into the story of the Columbian Exposition.

Finally, a Thomas Mann under my belt and I'm quite pleased with it. One might flippantly condense the plot thusly: Uptight dullard workaholic loner novelist driven to perpetual exhaustion by a severely self-imposed Germanic inner discipline takes a belated vacation in the sunny swarthy south and discovers he's the Humbert Humbert of the boy set. Timid in the face of true passion, Gustave von Aschenbach is quite a case. Harboring a chaste classical ideal of beauty unspoiled by animal passion, he stolidly embraces an Eros without the erotic. But when he spies a 14-year-old boy of white marble purity in Venice, his understanding of Beauty undergoes profound change, and he wrestles with the implications. Eventually it becomes a fatal obsession, his usual caution thrown to the wind, literally, to the disease-bearing sirocco. There are moments of surpassing loveliness in this often philosophical and poetic short novella. Mann's descriptions of Tadzio, the boy, are undeniably swoon inducing and the sensory descriptions of Venice are tangible and evocative. There's been much ado about various translations of this book; the most common being the one by H.T. Lowe-Porter, which I read. I didn't find anything particularly wrong with it, as a read. As for the translation itself, how can I know? I'm not bilingual. The first few pages are a tad difficult, but that is mainly due to Mann's meticulous and possibly imprecise attempts to explore various approaches to the artistic ideal and his highly detailed and repetitive explanations of Aschenbach's self-disciplinary nature. After that, when our man is on the boat to Venice, the book is mostly smooth going. I need to go back and watch the Luchino Visconti film with Dirk Bogarde, which is great, but unseen by me for many years.
