I've been reading a ton of books lately and this is one of my favorites out of the lot. I liked the characters and the whole mystery surrounding a few of them. It was a book I just couldn't put down and ultimately finished in less then 24 hours because I just wanted to keep going.

While I love Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series and I can't even tell you how many times I've read and re-read the first four in the series (Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn) I just... sort of lost interest in the story after that. I don't really have an interest in Briana and Roger's tale nor do I care about what William is doing or most any of the other side-stories (similar to reasons why I have troubles reading George R. R. Martin and his vast array of character). With that said I have read everything up until An Echo in the Bone (including the fun side-stories of Lord John Grey) but only 100 pages into this tome and I found myself skipping huge swaths of the story for lack of interest. I finally - oh so sadly - gave up and set this book down with a sigh unfinished. An Echo in the Bone was not speaking to me and that hurt because of how much I love the beginning of the story and the memories attached to those first four books. Whenever I moved - whether it was from Japan to Australia to anywhere else - those were the books I brought (along with Jacqueline Carey's first Kushiel trilogy). They were that good! But this book lacked something for me. It is still written in the beautiful and detail-oriented prose that Gabaldon is known for but I can't find myself caring about the fates of the characters that are not Jaime and Claire. That certain 'je ne sais quoi' is no longer there for me. I don't think I'll be picking up any new Outlander books but I'll continue to re-read my favorite of the bunch and the fateful beginning of Jaime and Claire's relationship. Ah well. It was a good run while it lasted.

I feel strange saying it because it is such a twisted and sad story, but I enjoyed reading this book. The attraction and love the main character feels towards Lolita and the twisted relationship that grows out of her girl crush on him was compelling to read about. I also enjoyed the newer version of the movie - the one with Jeremy Irons. I remember at the end of the that movie, my husband was like, "Why did you have me watch this?" because he also felt bad for Humbert even though at the same time we feel we shouldn't.

This book snuck up on me. At first I hated it - so depressing! I thought, "Oh here we go! Another 'deep, dramatic, artist' author with the prose of perfect pain.. blah, blah, blah." But as the story continued I wanted to know what the hell was going to happen to everyone and I got caught up in it. There were a lot of times where the author completely lost me. The story would be going on about one topic and then all of a sudden it would seem to reference something else that had nothing to do with the moment or an event in the story that you could remember. Ex: "He grabbed another roll from the stove top. The room was warm from baking the dinner. She heard the verse in her head." What? What verse? What the hell are you talking about? What about the rolls? But outside of being completely lost every now and then, it ended up being a far more interesting story then I thought it was going to be... though I'm still confused about some of it.

This book is a very funny quest of an agnostic to understand fundementalism and biblical literalism. Though he is unreligious himself, Jacobs tries to enter this experience with an open mind. While there are a lot of traditions that seem bizarre, there are quite a few that offer sanctuary and meaning. Jacobs even tries to place context around the more bizarre traditions (even the constantly confounding ban on mixed fibers.) At times I tired of his neuroses and self obsession. But overall the basic ideas of love, peace and acceptance are great ones that anyone should fit into their lives.

A fantastically beautiful allegory, the meaning of which doesn't hit you untill you've finished it. It makes you want to re-read the book immediately after finishing it.

Upon this age, that never speaks its mind, This furtive age, this age endowed with power To wake the moon with footsteps, fit an oar Into the rowlocks of the wind, and find What swims before his prow, what swirls behind-- Upon this gifted age, in its dark hour, Falls from the sky a meteoric shower Of facts...they lie unquestioned, uncombined. Wisdom enough to leech us of our ill Is daily spun; but there exists no loom To weave it into fabric; undefiled Proceeds pure Science, and has her say; but still Upon this world from the collective womb Is spewed all day the red triumphant child.
