This was just mediocre to me. But I'm dedicated to reading the full saga. I just wanted more vampire action!

I don't read poetry very often, but this was a short volume so I decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. Littlecrow-Russell is a member of the Ojibwe tribe and a lot, though not all, of her poetry deals with racial/ethnic identity, the frustration of dealing with wannabe Indians and Whites' romanticized views of the noble Indian, and the pain caused by economic isolation, alcoholism, and grinding poverty in many Indian communities--and the contradictions that arise when you're a smart, intelligent Indian woman who has become a lawyer, in a world that doesn't expect such things to occur.

easy read, great writer
Needed to switch up to lighter reading. Picoult always has a theme about a health condition. This one deals with infertility and music therapy, homosexuality and religion.
I had to psych myself up to read this book. My sister read it shortly after our family basset hound had been put to sleep and after hearing about her sob story as she read this, it didn't take me long to figure out how the story ended. I hate crying and knew this book would bring the tears flowing, so that's why it has taken me two years to get to the point of where I knew I wanted to read the book. Marley & Me made me laugh out loud and cry like a baby. If you have ever had a pet and can identify with it being considered a member of your family, this book will hit home. Pets bring you endless enjoyment and memories, as well as provide you unconditional love, and I know in my own experience, their loss hurts you more than you could ever imagine. To summarize, I'll pass along my sister's advice--don't read this in a public place (I'm a train/bus reader and saved this one for solely home use) unless you are not ashamed to blubber in public! Through all the tears and laughter though, I am so glad I finished this book. I can know see why it is so popular.
Very interesting from a historical perspective. I'm sure I appreciate the state of medicine much more now after reading about the extent of body snatching for research in the 17th century. I gave this book only 3 stars because although it held my interest and I enjoyed the medical history, I quickly realized that this is just the tip of the iceberg -- especially since the footnotes and additional research references comprised another 50 pages after the book actually ends.
