Alibi is by Joseph Kanon, the writer of The Good German - a new movie out with Tobey and George in it. It takes place in Venice right after the war and involves former Nazi informants meeting armistice-freed concentration camp victims meeting each other after the war. There's murder and a naive American lieutenant who tries to vindicate the prisoner's suffering but really just makes a huge mess of things. It was a decent page turner; I've often wondered how Europe recovered after the camps were empty and everyone was less genocidal. I think Kanon gives an accurate and interesting look at post-WWII Europe.

I really didn't think I would like this book as much as I did. I think it's about the 4th or 5th book I've read this year on the subject of great loss and a few pages in, I was doubting I could get through it. But this little gem snuck up on me and I couldn't put it down. Another piece of beautiful writing that was a heart wrenching pleasure to read.

Even if your passions lie somewhere other than mathematics and baseball, you might wish to know someone who understands and communicates them as well as Ogawa does.

Actually this book is very good, the writer shows a great knowledge about Egypt and its political situation before the revolution. But this is not intended to be a book for Egyptians -and I'm one of them-; as they most probably know nearly all the info/stories if they have read current periodicals then. Finally, Bradley clearly predicts the uprising of Egyptians, although if you are following Egypt's news now you would not say anything except: EGYPT IS UNPREDICTABLE. If, whoever reads this review, wants to know what preceded the 25th of January revolt, then you are looking at the right book.

Una colección de 100 cuentos escritos en el siglo XIV, escritos no de manera "académica" o académica, sino para la gente común, y no en latín sino en italiano. En general, el libro es muy bueno, aunque las historias abarcan desde excelente hasta relleno de páginas. Las mejores historias son las divertidas, particularmente las contadas por Dioneo, cuyas historias concluyen cada conjunto de diez historias y que a veces son increíblemente divertidas y vulgares. La historia sobre "volver a poner al diablo en el infierno" me hizo reír en voz alta, al igual que la del marido homosexual que atrapa a su esposa engañándolo. Las historias más serias también son buenas, pero a veces pueden toparse con estos pasajes largos que pueden afectar seriamente la acción. Boccacio es simplemente decente en la historia y la tragedia, pero excelente en la comedia. Un libro realmente bueno para quienes viajan en el metro como yo, ya que usualmente puedes encontrar algunas historias de ida y vuelta al trabajo todos los días.
