The correct spelling of this book title is: "Le Coeur cambriolé." This was a lesser-known, 1920 novella from the guy who brought us "The Phantom of the Opera" in 1911. The story, you'll find, has similar elements, but is clearly unique. It was It has shades of The Phantom, as well as Dorian Grey. I liked it, but found myself smirking a lot.

This was Jeremiah's book for yet another, "delightful" 4th grade project, but i really enjoyed learning about Eleanor Roosevelt...how she came out of a pretty sad & tumultuous childhood & ended up marrying her 5th cousin FDR (didn't know that little tidbit)& became an amazing leader & human rights advocate! I was a bit surprised, given that it's a "Junior World Biography" that they included info re: FDR's infidelity, (not much, but some)and how Eleanor felt betrayed & no longer had a romantic relationship with FDR, but rather a political partnership. (Sounds a wee bit like the Clintons, no?) Just not sure that info was necessary for my 10 year old to read. I would like to read one of her own books, now...

dave gave this to us bridesmaids before the wedding. the first 50-100 pages i was using a map to figure out who was who but it gets really good in the middle .... an interesting take on what the lives of biblical women could have been like. of course no one knows because the lives of women were not chronicled like men.
This book kept me in suspense all the time! Really good! Hope, the second part of the story will be the same or even better.

This book has two stories that end up entertwined. One is about a postmistress in Massachusetts and the other is about a female broadcaster working in England during WW II. (both unusal careers for women in that time frame) Most of us were not alive during WWII so this gives us a peek at what then could have been like on the war front in Europe as well as in a small town in the U.S. It shows how what happened abroad could have affected those left at home. In her "story behind the story" Sarah Blake poses the questions, "how do we know when we are really in danger as a nation? How do you come to understand thta the moment you may be in is historic and what can you do about it? What must it have been like for Americans trying to make sense of the news they were receiving from abroad?" These questions are as relevant today as they were in WW II.

Tells the story of a family - white professor Howard, African queen (metophorically) Kiki, college poet-wanna-be Zara, newly religious Jerome, and confused teenager Levi - through a tumultous and adulterous period of their lives as they establish their own identities and make meanings of their lives and new people they find in them. Well-written characters and seemingly light with some big upsets.
Interesting story of a couple and she gives birth to twins. One was born a healthy son and the other a daughter with Down Syndrome. The twins were separated at birth by their father that feared that the daughter would die and sent her to an institution, telling the mother that the daughter died. I don't want to ruin the story, but she doesn't go to an institution. So, the whole story is how this father could ever live with himself... but what I really enjoyed was reading how far we have come in our society to love and accept those that are different or have different challenges. In many ways this was a tough book to read, but I really enjoyed it as well.
Had a hard time getting into it, but ended up having a hard time putting it down.
