Edited by Jean Stein and George Plimpton, this massive oral biography does well the formidable job of presenting a tragic life, the Warhol scene, and even the old families of New England. Edie Sedgwick died at age 28 after becoming famous as the first Factory girl, an Oscar Wilde/Paris Hilton fame of being oneself first, and then pursuing projects afterward. The interview subjects range from Truman Capote to Andy Warhol to Gregory Corso to various family members, and are presented without background information in short, numbered chapters. Even on the base level of organization this biography is impressive: how do you edit thousands and thousands of interviews with over 250 people into a compelling, thorough narrative? I highly, highly recommend this one. Edie herself is a mysterious character you feel only lived for other people, failing at living at all for herself. She had no interior, simply something distracted by cameras, alcohol, and massive drug use. Fitting that this life then is shown through the voices of other people. You get the sense, tragically, that nobody really knew her because there was no real "her" to know: she merely existed as a media moment, something beautiful—not 10 pages pass without someone reminiscing of their first sight and coup de foudre of Edie—that in order to be famous couldn't exist in the normal world. The book performs the basic task of relating her life from birth to death, but also works as a critique of how modern fame functions in America. Nobody comes out better on the other side: casualties are listed throughout, even touching Warhol through his near-fatal shooting by Valerie Solanas and his subsequent reclusion. Everything is presented plainly, in a quietly devastating style. An excellent book.

Once you get past the highly improbable premise on which the story is based, this is a better than average romance novel. Caitlyn and Gideon were high school sweethearts. She was the rich girl, he was the illegitimate son of a rich man and a poor woman. Their fathers teamed up to send him off to the Army to get him out of town. She thinks he died; he thought she forgot about him. His father died, and decided to make him the heir (rather than the two legitimate sons). She found out she was pregnant shortly after he left town, and married someone else, who conveniently enough was struck by lightening and killed just a few months ago. As I said, a very improbable premise, but I really liked the characters themselves. Caitlyn was learning to be independent--and that it was ok to ask for help. Gideon is trying to put the horror of war behind him. They have their past, but have to work for a future. The book is mass-market romance and it has some very steamy intimate scenes and they happen before marriage. Despite the sweet-looking cover, this is not a Macomber-style romance. Oh, and just in case you are wondering--they live happily ever after. I'd like to thank the publisher for offering a complimentary review copy via NetGalley. Grade: B

Book about Baltimore police dept. by David Simon, who later created the best television show in the history of the universe.
My 9th grade English teacher was not able to convince me that this is a great book and I haven't changed my mind. Read this if you love old men and or the sea. I thought it was boooooooooooooring.
Owen, Frank, Audrey, and Jin-Ae meet online while discussing their suicide attempts. The four bond quickly and start chatting on a regular basis and end up forming a pact. They will meet, take a road trip to visit the graves of celebrities that have committed suicide, and end their trip and their lives, together, in Death Valley. The story sounded very promising and as a reader I was expecting the raw emotions of a book like IMPULSE by Ellen Hopkins, but instead it just came across as a little silly. The characters didn’t really ring true. A few important aspects, which could have used some discussion, about Audrey and Owen are left completely hanging and the conflicts in the story are too quickly resolved and leave the reader unsatisfied in the end.

I could not force myself to read the last 30 pages because I just no longer care what happens. There is no depth to this book - everything seems so "on the surface." Clare just seemed very stuffy and full of herself, always pushing her advice on family and friends while not dealing with her own issues.

The inside cover describes this love story as completely unique and unexpected. I thought she had stolen the story from my journal changing only the details of my country of orgin, digs at Americans, and every one knows I would NEVER hike mountains like a norwegian god, but the rest was my love story. Well written, funny, and true, very very true.
