Okay, so I read Lament and Ballad out of order. It obviously took away some of the suspense, but what it gave me in return was real appreciation for how well Stiefvater got into the point of view of Deidre and James in the respective books. It made me wish Stephenie Meyer had done the same with Edward, but we only got Bella's side of the story in the Twilight series. Both Lament and Ballad are definitely worth a read! Now I'm going to have to add Shiver to my list. :)

It's been a long time since I read the first two books, but I was surprised how much I remembered and fell right back into the story. I loved this book (and the series). Strong, courageous heroine who realizes life is hard, but moves forward anyway. Heart-breaking at times, but was smiling in the end.

few people write in a more lyrical and beautiful way than toni morrison. i had to read this book twice and i know i could read it again without getting every allusion, symbol, and meaning outu of it. the story is intense and sad, and the writing is incredible.

ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature. Paladin of Souls takes place just after the events of The Curse of Chalion and focuses on one of the minor female characters in Curse. It can stand alone, but you'll get a lot more out of it if you read Curse first. This is another beautifully written masterpiece which won several prestigious awards, including a Hugo and a Nebula. Not only is Bujold an excellent writer, but her world of Chalion is believable and complex, the magic is deep, fascinating, and just plain scary. This is very far from the wizard-coming-of-age, orphan-boy-saves-the-world, or hunk-whips-up-on-the-bad-guys-with-a-cool-sword kind of fantasy epic. This is fresh. And highly recommended. I enjoyed reading this book, but it felt contrived, as if the author picked a subject matter and tried to build a story around it. I guess it just fell flat and unbelievable in areas. At the same time, I never felt like I wanted to abandon it.

This book was awesome. It contains one of the best lines ever. The author was describing a larger curvaceous woman. The description said "She was a large woman, but none of it was extra". This was a great funny sf novel.
