Sixth in the Booth Peak District mystery series featuring detectives Diane Fry and Ben Cooper. The story revolves around body snatching and a mysterious caller leaving messages about death with the police. Long and takes a while to unravel, but engrossing reading. As usual the relationship between Fry and Cooper leaves a lot to be desired as one senses a stronger connection between them which does not develop from novel to novel.

The science to sex ratio was a bit off in my view (not in a good way). She is an engaging writer but many of these experiments had a high sadness factor. Like, "why are we quantifying this?" I would read something else by her.

I feel like 'Cutting for Stone' belongs in the same category as books like 'The Poisonwood Bible.' It's a multi-generational epic novel that delves into heart-wrenching issues of love, passion, race, transgression, love, forgiveness, and redemption. Book description from Amazon: Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon. Orphaned by their mother’s death and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Moving from Addis Ababa to New York City and back again, Cutting for Stone is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, medicine and ordinary miracles--and two brothers whose fates are forever intertwined. This book is beautifully written; I read it marveling at how powerful the written word can be. At the same time, it made me want to shake my fist at God, cry and sometimes just sit back and reflect. I highly recommend it. Content note: There is definitely sex in this book. I didn't find it necessarily gratuitous (the book is written from a male's point of view and spans the adolescent years). But for those who might be sensitive to such subject matter, be forewarned.

For those of you that follow Typing Tiara you'll know already that I've only just begun to get into retellings, and both of them that I have read and loved were retellings of classic literature not fairy tales. In fact, I've only ever read one fairy tale retelling and at the time I wasn't even aware of the fairy tale that was being retold! Therefore I consider Spindle's End, a retelling of Sleeping Beauty, to be my first. Normally this is the point in the review where I'd start gushing about the main characters but when it comes to main characters this novel isn't exactly easy to pinpoint due to the way that it is told. However, the character's whom I loved the most are as follows: Katriona, Rosie and Aunt. It was around these three women, specifically Katriona and Rosie that the novel revolves. Though I know the story of Sleeping Beauty well enough, I can't put my finger on where I first read or heard the fairy tale itself. I know the basics but its not a fairy tale I would consider myself an authority on. In that regard I cannot tell you how well this interpretation keeps to the original fairy tale, only that in my eyes it read as if it were a fairy tale. Not a retelling so much as the fairy tale itself. If that makes any sense. For those of you used to action-packed YA that goes by in a flash Spindle's End will be something different. Its narration is like that of an actual fairy tale with little dialogue, the story itself is told almost completely through narration as if the story is being told to you instead of occuring as you read it. This form of narration results in Spindle's End being a slower-paced book, still delicious to read, just not devour in a single sitting. Or at least I wasn't able to. Its a book you linger over. Filled with poetic prose, beautiful imagery and a fascinating world. Rating: 3/5

I watched the movie adaptation of Big Fish a few years ago and fell in love with its meandering story and tall tales and mythology. Finding the book online a couple of weeks ago, I bought it one day expecting much of the same, wanting more of that fantastical story telling which made me love the movie. The book is... different. I'm trying to figure out if I enjoyed it or not, because while it is a short book I had to make myself finish the last half of it. The main character, Edward Bloom, was at times quite unlikeable, which is always a turn off, and while the stories of his life were imaginative and fun to read, they were also bland in a whole new level of imaginative fun-to-read blandness unlike anything I've ever come across before. I know that I probably went into this the wrong way, by expecting more of the same of the movie, but I just didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I'd would. Lessons have definitely been learned about having too high an expectation.

Read the first story, wasn't all that smitten, took it back to the library.
I would have given this one a 3.5. I was a little disappointed in this venture. One of the main reasons was the plot premise - trying to recapture from spies a hovering machine that can see people's auras. It was not believable to me and I'm sorry if they actually just invented one but it still sounds like sci-fi. I was also able to figure out whodunit fairly easily. I realize it would be difficult to write a psychic character who does not recognize that she is being fooled by the bad guys, but the clues were too obvious this time around. Still looking forward to the next adventure, though! Product Description Abby Cooper's next mission may truly be impossible... Abby Cooper, the FBI's newest Civilian Profiler, is adding Spy to her resume. The military's digital photography software that captures one's aura- just like Abby can-sits in a drone aircraft that's been stolen. It's a major breach in security as every country's leader can be identified by their aura... Abby springs into action to stop the criminals before they set their diabolical plan into motion, while making herself a prime target.
