I found this book to be really...weird. I was so confused a lot of the time. I get that there are two different worlds and Ava is/was in both of them. But the plot of the world where she is now, and the plot of the world that she came from was all mixed up. I tried to keep them straight but I couldn't. The only character I really liked was Jane. I felt so bad for her. All she wanted was her daughter, her Ava, and you could see how much she wanted to be love and have her "daughter" let her love her. I didn't really care about any of the other characters. I think that since they were involved in both worlds, I kept getting them confused and didn't connect with them. I dunno. I will say that it did keep me interested. I wanted to find out what was going on, both with what happened to the Ava of our world and why the Ava of the other world was pulled to this world. But I don't think I ever really got the answers. Or if I did, I just plain don't understand them!

I sped through the last 50 pages. I loved the first two books in this series, the third was just OK. Wish I hadn't read this fourth one. It just didn't have the same feel as the earlier ones. Glad to be moving on to another book!

I had heard that this was the greatest book ever. It had been recommended to me by two professors and all the hype made me get my expectations a little too high. However, it was a very good book dealing very well and comprehensively with a very difficult subject. It is a very fast read and highly structured. It really puts the idea and culture behind death and the process of grieving in perspective.
Okay, I’ll admit that I’m a sucker for a good arranged marriage story. I love it when an author throws two opposite but perfect-for-each-other people into a situation that makes them “hate” each other. All the clashes and fireworks make for a great read. Amy Talbot created two strong and relatable characters to fight and fall-in-love: Vania who is an Australian grade-school teacher and Deven who is an Indian business mogul. They’re from very different cultures but share many of the same values at the core of who they are. I love how skillfully Talbot writes her way into the reader’s heart with this story. The Rajah's Chosen Bride has a great beginning and an even better end.

Madelaine, while out riding, meets by chance Francoise Jarosseau, one of the laborers. This begins a secret, forbidden romance that could lead to Francoise's death and extreme punishment for Madelaine if her father discovers the truth. A second hurricane keeps Francoise at the plantation, working, but it also brings a wealthy suitor for Madelaine, Rory Quinn. Madelaine must avoid the seemingly charming Rory's flirtations without arrousing her father's suspicions. As a final, even more devestating hurricane approaches, Madelaine and Francoise find themselves not only fighting for their love, but for their lives. This book is a romantic story about remaining hopeful and keeping love alive even when all odds seemed stacked against you. Recommended to readers who enjoy young adult historical romance.

Tough Read regardless if you have been abused or not. And for those who have been abused this book may be a trigger. Having said that I found A Stolen Life inspirational which is why I gave it 5 stars. I commend Jaycee for sharing her story. As to the actual writing - one will not find beautiful prose or inspirational quotes to tack on your wall. As Jaycee's story of her childhood it reads authentically from a child's viewpoint since she mentally/emotionally arrested at around age 11. It comes off more in the format of a diary and does include some of her journaling. Nothing is polished or neatly edited so if that bothers you beware. I did though walk away with a few gems, more validations than anything about how beauty and hope survive in horrible circumstances and how fear controls and overwhelms. Also her narrative shows how emotional lines can be blurred in the relationship between abuser/abused. Which for those who have never been abused can either be confusing or be a glimpse into the very complex nature of the beast. Overall there are no easy answers here or any answers at all. Jaycee was and is a beautiful girl who sustained her belief in love and hope throughout her ordeal, & after when reunited with her mother. That is a very beautiful thing and can give hope to all the other Jaycee's out there. That alone should make this a 5 star book.

On one hand, you know exactly what you're getting with Dav Pilkey. It's why I'm such a fan, all things considered. With that said, what I wasn't expecting was a toilet-stealing parody of How the Grinch Stole Christmas in the middle of this book. Worth the price of admission right there.
Took a long time to slog through but it was worth it.
