I know I'm supposed to love this book, but as of yet, I have no emotional attachment whatsoever to the characters or any other element. I'm shelving it in favor of other books right now, but I'll give it another shot eventually. At the very least, the dialogue is funny in parts.

Published before Air Guitar and near impossible to find, these four essays on beauty are more esoteric and academic than Hickey's later writings. In a way, they're also more enjoyable. These essays are not spectacles so much as they are very adroit observations. Before you condemn Hickey for Air Guitar, put your nose between these pages.

excellent book. Loved the way it was written. It flowed from character to character and they were all inter-related. Very small town hilarious and interesting. The characters were ordinary, which made the book all the more involving because these people could be your neighbours.

This is one of the funniest things I've ever read. It was scandalous when published, and it's easy to see why. I've had a lot of fun gauging friend's and family's reactions to this book. A musician friend thought Roth was a "sick m..f.." and yet said he could not stop reading. He also thought it was funny. My aunt Shirley loved it, and she read it late in life. It was fascinating how when I read it, I focused on all the issues the young man was having, while Shirley focused on the father, who was having lots of older person issues. It's a humdinger. It's vulgar, so don't say I didn't warn you.
