Jacqueline Mitchard writes great dialogue and tows a just big enough, somewhat improbable plot along well. She has a very likable, nurturing, heroine who has been deserted by her wannabe hippie husband, and afflicted by dread disease. What might be Mitchard's best writing in this book comes when she questions whether this paragon heroine might have done things better by the husband and in their marriage.

I loved this book! I adored the love story between Henry and Keiko. I would have given it 5 stars, but I thought the ending was too abrupt. I wasn't ready for the love story to be over... I know there was more!

This one crept up on me as I read it. It starts simple, and then moves back and forth in time sketching out the narrative and the characters. One of the best examples of "show, don't tell" that I've ever come across. Maybe my interest in the old 60's romantic revolutionaries flavored my initial attraction, I don't know....But before I knew it, I was drawn in--caring about the characters. And it used just the right level of Mimento-like flashes to pull you along without losing you in excessive complexities of detail. I would love to read more by THIS author.

A frumpy house wife dosen't feel she is in the perfect mommy club. There is a murder in her neighborhood and she sets out to solve it. She solves it but realizes she is in a loveless marriage and dosen't enjoy being a mom. No one wins in this novel.

There's a special place in my heart for this book. Though partially due to my middle school nostalgia associated with it, I credit this book to the start of my sordid love affair with books...

"Crossing California" is one of the most endearing books I've read in the past few years. Set in Chicago from 1979-1981, the book follows two Jewish families (the Wasserstroms and the Rovners), a sensitive pre-teen (Muley Wills), his jaded mother Deirdre and nearly everyone who makes an impression on their lives. Langer is almost cinematic in the way he effortlessly intertwines the characters. This book made me feel what it was like to grow up in Rogers Park in the late 70s and early 80s. But the characters are timeless and the book is simply heartfelt and hilarious. I'd recommend it to anyone who has an interest in Chicago and coming-of-age stories.

Well, I'm glad I stuck with this series. I wasn't crazy about the first book, but continued to reading the series because I bought the box set. We definately have a steamy love triangle here! But, I'm banking on a soon to be love quad developing! So far, I'm Team Heath!

When I first read about this book, I thought I would love it: Hong Kong, family secrets, thoughtful and secretive teenagers, loss. Right up my alley, right? Then, as I read it, I really wanted to hate it, because Alice Greenway is writing about the things I tend to write about (family secrets, thoughtful and secretive teenagers, loss). And she does it sooo beautifully. Her prose is so taut that it almost hurts. But I couldn't hate it. It's stark and lyrical, yet pulsing with energy and raw pain. And Greenway is one of the few writers I've seen (Asian or no) to describe Hong Kong and Chinese culture in a way that felt authentic and real, rather than guidebook-y or history-lesson-y. Simply put, this is a beautiful book. Not a perfect one, by any means, but beautiful. And it's tiny--only 170 pages or so. I always want to know if a novel can be written as tightly and compactly as a short story, and White Ghost Girls suggests maybe so.
