I finished reading this book several weeks ago, and yet I still feel as though I am living under its haze. The characters are written with such care, such attention to detail, that I remember them now as though I had known them. And yet, Yates makes it all seem so effortless. So, this is what Tennessee Williams said about the book, and I think he really got it right: "Here is more than fine writing; here is what, added to fine writing, makes a book come immediately, intensely and brilliantly alive. If more is needed to make a masterpiece in modern American fiction, I am sure I don't know what it is."
It's by my creative writing professor from junior year. Orenstein's language is downright beautiful. The vivid imagery takes readers effortlessly to rural Alaska and into the main character's everyday lives. I admire how the story begins with several unique threads that eventually weave together around--you guessed it--a mysterious 'unseen companion.' This would be a great book to discuss in a class or book club because of the overarching themes, especially those about race, courage, companionship, and growing up. This is an absorbing and touching read.

I enjoyed this book, quite a lot. I did have some major problems with it though. One of them was there were so many characters I often forgot who was going through what problem. I also found that many of the main characters were one dimensional. Still a fun read though and I was happy to add a few more books to my reading list after reading the summaries of the books read in "the reading group".

The real story of the greatest chef of the Napoleonic era isn't much of a story. Though Antonin Careme published many volumes on cuisine, only the high points of his life are known, so this short book is mostly involved with the historical background of Careme's time. You get brief sketches of Careme's first major employer, the statesman Tallyrand, George IV of England, Alexander I of Russia, the Rothchilds, and various Bonapartes. At times the author tries to elevate Careme through his assocation with these starry notables and the way they courted Careme's talent, but I felt that just as often their power dwarfs Careme's celebrity. The merits of this book are that it is short, very beautifully designed, and full of historical tidbits. For instance, the practice of serving on individual plates was known as service a la russe and was popularized by Careme in France, where service a la Francese--sort of like family style today--was popular. The recipes are fascinating in that they show how far food has evolved. The typical soup recipe calls for boiling meat and vegetables for half a day and then passing it through a sieve. This is a nice book to have on your shelf, just don't take it into the kitchen!

This isn't the kind of book you love, this is the kind of book you truly appreciate. Tim O'Brien wrote a short story called "How to Tell A True War Story". This is what Crawford does, I believed every word because none of these stories has a conclusion. You're left with a horrible feeling of mixed emotions. That can't happen unless it's true. Strangely, I feel better for reading it. But not in any kind of shiny happy people way.
I liked The Secret Life of Bees. It was a little bit of a slow read for me but it was a thoughtful and well written book. I liked it enough to purchase The Mermaid Chair, to try another Sue Monk Kidd book.

I loved this book so much! I've always loved books about different types of aging (or not aging!), and this one intrigued me! I read this book for a school project, and I was suprised that I was one of the only students who liked it. I thought it was extremely well written and creative. Winnie comes from a well-to-do family, but longs for adventure outside of her house with her parents and grandmother. One day, she runs away from and meets the Tuck family. They drank from a magic spring and became immortal. This book is so well written and I would reccomend it for pre-teens.

They style that this book is written in--5 narrators with such distinct voices--was a huge influence when I was writing my thesis. I just re-read it a couple times ago, and it is still outstanding, though this time through it felt like it went on a little long once the climax happened.

A quick read, and a good book - it brings back characters from Tithe and Valiant. Overall, the trilogy was entertaining, but I don't think it was as satisfying as some other young adult authors (like Melissa Marr or even Justine Larbalestier).

Intenté todo el camino hasta 220 para que me gustara el libro. Pero simplemente no me importan ninguno de los personajes. Honestamente, puedo leer el libro en este momento y ni siquiera me importa cómo termina.
