I went through three phases with this book. I enjoyed the beginning and getting to know the 93 year year old narrator. I was very upset in the middle of the book with the animal cruelty issues. But at the end I calmed down a bit and enjoyed the surprised ending. I kept waiting for the magic moment to come and all the depression to end. I'm glad I stuck it out. Re-read for book club liked it even more the 2nd time around

** spoiler alert ** The second book in the Mortal Instruments series is provocative, dramatic, shocking, intense--everything the first book was and more. It includes foreshadowing that stirs your thoughts, causing you to reorganize the pieces to the puzzle, creating a totally new (yet still unclear) image. It also includes several temptations--of power, of forbidden love, of blood, and bloodshed. And, of course, there are countless twists in this book--some predictable, some not, but all add up to create this amazing, addicting, entertaining series. City of Ashes is definite four-star material, verging on five. It's almost as if the brother-sister relationship between Clary and Jace is necessary in order for readers to grasp just how impossible their love is. Think about books like Twilight, Eternal, Vampire Academy, The Host, Evernight, etc. The relationship(s) presented obvious problems, but none of them were quite impossible. Clary and Jace's relationship is completely hopeless because nothing can change the blood that flows through their veins. They are and always will be siblings. The action was intense. Like a movie, Cassandra Clare switched views between characters during fighting scenes. It was so gripping and addicting and . . . indescribable. Death was everywhere. Pain was, too. Do I need to actually write about what City of Ashes was about? Valentine captures the soul-sword with the intent of using it to control otherworldly demons and create a better army than before. Meanwhile, Clary is stuck between boys. That is Simon and her brother Jace. Simon is her new boyfriend (?) but she still has feelings for Jace. Somehow they must overcome all this weirdness and face Valentine and his new army of Stronger Demons. SPOILERS AHEAD! Simon becomes an active part in the Downworld when he becomes a vampire. He, Clary, and Jace are all oddities compared to others of their likeness. Simon is a vampire that surivives the sunlight. Clary is the only Shadowhunter with the ability to create new runes. Jace has some superShadowhunter strength that comes directly from the angel, as the Queen of the Seelie Court said. Jace shocks readers by saving Simon from certain death. Simon shocks us by giving up Clary. On her way to tell the truth to Jace, he, too, gives her up, swearing that from now on he'll be her brother and only that. The epilogue ends with a major cliffhanger. I'm hoping by the next book everything is cleared up between Jace and Clary. But that is unlikely. EXTRA! Playlist Baby, It's Fact by Hellogoodbye

I read this book in a day and a half, if that tells you how good it was. Although this was my first read by Mr. Prince I will definitely be reading more by this author. His writing style is so smooth that it was easy to get caught up in the story. This book definitely had 5-star potential but what brought it down to a 3.5 stars for me was the ending. Những Câu Chuyện Đáng Sợ - Những Thần Thoại Ớn Xương Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

I'm a huge fan of Ruth Rendell's suspense novels (as opposed to her Inspector Wexford mysteries, which I don't read as often) and always enjoy her crisp prose and wit. But this novel, from the 1970s, isn't as good as most, perhaps because none of the main characters are compelling. The main protagonist is Stanley, a no-good husband who wants his mother-in-law dead so he can finally put his hands on her money. These two enemies spar humorously, neither of them attractive to the reader, while Vera, the poor wife, stands by her man. She isn't interesting at all, has let Stanley run things for two decades, and so is frustratingly obtuse--as she of course needs to be for the story to work. But it makes for less enjoyable reading than usual, since there's nothing interesting about her as a character. Most interesting to this reader was the look back at the simple days before internet and email, when bank slips were written out by hand and people wrote letters to each other!
