Connecting the dots in Middle Earth.

Although the idea for the story was very creative, I didn't like how the book ended. The character development was excellent, and I really felt like I had a good understanding of the emotion behind their decision-making, and the difficulty they endured.

Highly reccomended for anyone who is curious about the history of extreme music. I feel weird giving 5 stars to a music book (I mean, it's not like it changed the discourse on modern artistic expression or anything), but given the limited appeal of the subject matter at hand I don't see how the author couldn't have done much better. There are a few bands mentioned briefly that probably could have been left out all together, but that's nitpicking. Very well-researched, but yet written in a style that still makes it fun to read (always a challenge with music books, which easily degenerate into lists or collections of quotes). The selected discography at the end is a nice touch.

It was suggested that I read this short horror story collection from back to front and, having done so, I think it was a good idea. Not because the first story was the best but because the last two were definitely not the most enjoyable for me. In this case, three stars means I liked about half of the tales here, but even the ones I didn't love still had interesting concepts and strong writing. Wagner conjures up many a creepy image, but short modern horror still doesn't hold the appeal for me that a classic ghost story does.

An incredibly beautiful and moving book. Since I read it and gave it this rating, I have heard of people doing their entire doctoral theses on it and I think I should read it again and see whether I would give it 5 stars now.

I picked this one up at a local used bookstore awhile ago and tried to read it but just couldn't get into it. Then, I saw a few goodreads friends had read it and enjoyed it so I decided to give it another chance. And, I'm soooo glad that I did. I think I just wasn't in the right place to read it earlier. But, this read was wonderful! I really enjoyed the book - the writing alone is outstanding. I was amazed at the luscious writing ... the descriptions of time and place were just amazingly well written. The author was able to describe the place in a way that just made me feel that I was there, experiencing every single, beautiful word. And, then, by putting that beautiful place up against the brutal and ugly world of slavery, McBride was able bring that time in our history alive for me. The story is focused on the complexities of slavery - the system, the brutality. And it really brings all of it to life. And I was glad that McBride seemed to bring to focus the fact that no one was able to break the chains of the system - white or black. This was not a book focused on the evil of the white man - it was focused on the evil of SLAVERY itself. No blame really - just a exploration of the system and its complexities. That was quite refreshing and gave me a different perspective that usually seen in books about this time in history. One element that I really found interesting was how McBride gave the reader a view modern-day African American society through the eyes of a slave. Those passages were fascinating to me. Those visions haunted me and gave me so much to think about. I really enjoyed this book - very compelling and interesting. I definitely recommend it!

I was very reluctant to read this book. It looked good enough but the reviews were so back and forth, either people loved it or hated it. There was no in between. As you can see I finally got around to reading it. It was a bit of a rough start. The first 50 pages were awful. Way too much detail about the surroundings and not enough about the characters or time, or place. I mean would it be so hard to tell me how the horde began or more about the bugs (nanoagents). Or tell me why Mina looks so different???? And what's the Creche? Even though the beginning was rough by page 52 I was all in. I heard some people didn't like Rhys (The Iron Duke) I guess i can see it but I love him. His attitude and morals as a pirate and duke are set to this world and the way things are there. I still haven't finished this book however so i will do so before i finish my review.
I learned soo much reading this book! Jerry Bridges really knows his stuff. He's very specific and clear about his points. He really gives a balanced view about the importance of diligent obedience coupled with spirit dependence. I like this quote: Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach of God's grace. And your good days are never so good that you are beyond the need of God's grace". Oh yea, this book also won "The Gold Medallion Book Award".
