We concluded after our bookclub discussion, that reading this book was a lot like watching TV. Doesn't make you think too much. Overall though, an enjoyable read. I may even go so far as to say that the book makes a case for simplifying reading. Why the need to make something of everything? Maybe somethings just are . But then, that may be stretching. The caricatures do make you wince at some points. (But maybe we're all caricatures anyway & the point is it's inescapable. It may be better than overwrought quirkiness Gr.)

I read this book in one afternoon, which is to say it was gripping. But after finishing it, I realize it was not as "deep" or philosophical as I was expecting; almost a bit too teeny-bopper for me.

For the privileged, 1911 was the last golden year of the Edwardian era in Britain. Juliet Nicolson, granddaughter of author Vita Sackville-West, delightfully evokes the ennui, scandals, and excess of that blisteringly hot summer when the English “danced on the edge of the abyss”. By focusing on the lives of the shy new Queen of England, the young, ambitious Winston Churchill, the beautiful, audacious debutante, Lady Diana Manners, the naughty, extravagant aristocracy, an observant, enterprising butler, poets, writers, painters, strikers, and others, Nicolson illuminates a Britain of extremes. If war clouds were not yet all that evident, social unrest certainly was. One can’t help but realize how drastically life was about to change for all these people, as well as the nation. Rich with the details of everyday life and intriguing events, The Perfect Summer is as engaging as a novel.

I didn't like this book as much and the first two; maybe because its been a while since I've read the first two in the series and the excite wore off. A lot of explaining and less of an emotional story to follow. Second half is better than the first half. I'm still glad to have finished the series.

The Second in the Smoke series. This one goes a little darker, it still maintains the lighter playful tone, but the supernatural creepy it features is-- extra creepy. Huff plays with Time and Ghosts and actually takes a trope you see more often in science fiction and makes it work. Or rather, it feels more like the science fiction version than the fantasy version. It's creepy, without an over abundance of gore (though there is some!) and the ultimate cause wasn't easily guessed by me. Through it all, the relationship between Tony and Lee moves apace. The structure is familiar to anyone who reads fanfiction, though I am delighted that it doesn't move too fast and that the pace of it really fits with Lee's own struggle.
