I try and read it every couple of years, and each time I come away with an entirely different set of impressions and meanings. With the right attitude and a patient determination, it's one of the most rewarding pieces of literature in recent history. Forget about those professors sitting up in their stuffy offices grimly poring over it. It's one of the most hysterical books I've ever read. Having said all that, don't be afraid to invest a little money into it as well by purchasing Don Gifford's indespinsable Ulysses Annotated. It's almost a line-by-line gloss, and if its authority and interpretations aren't concurrently referred to ad nauseum, it can be an invaluable tool.

A coming of age book with a twist. Banks does a great job on character developement. I've also read his other book "The Sweet Hereafter" which was made into a movie, I was hoping for a Rules of the Bone movie as well....not too late in my opinion since this is a timeless piece of work. I've bought several copies of this book because my friends would "borrow" and never returned them. I guess they value it just as much. My 5th copy and I hope my last was signed by Russell Banks himself so I don't think I'll loan this one.

A superbly engaging book. Ever wonder why so many runners are constantly suffering from injuries, even those who do NOT become super athletes, but simply job for exercise? McDougall had the same question and launched into a journey of discovery. A significant part of the journey was discovery of a tribe of runners in northern Mexico, living in remote canyons, who can run for days at a time with little or no rest, do that barefoot and injury free. The conclusion, backed up by significant data, is that our reliance on running shoes that have been consistently improved to shelter our feet from any impact with the earth is the culprit. Ultimately, running barefoot is the answer, but of course, most of us are not ready for that. It might take some time (years?) for most of us to acclimate. However, some footware manufacturers have come to realize the dynamic and have begun designing shoes that bring us closer to the earth, and to natural running and foot movement. Shoes like Vibram Five Fingers are becoming popular. If you are into running and exercise, you will enjoy and appreciate this book. McDougall writes like fiction, but his research, including using himself as a test subject, will have you wanting to share the book, re-read it, and look for more that he has written
