I definitely found this one hard to put down. Lots of twists and turns and things to keep you wondering, but tied together pretty well in the end. It has a bit of the Fatal Attraction over the top "What? There's more?" quality toward the end, and the ending drags on a bit after the thrill ride, but, over all, worthwhile.

So... I was a little disappointed with this book. I was more interested in Dorian's relationship with Keenan (Ashaya's son) than I was about his relationship with Ashaya. I thought I was going to scream if one more secret was dropped. Both main characters just seemed so cold. However, I was still reading for the rest of the story, the parts connected with the overall series arc. I found myself skimming scenes between the two main characters, just to see what would happen next. So, overall, it was ok, but probably one I would skip if I re-read the series.

This is a non-fiction book about a fugitive slave who made his way to Boston. He was captured in Boston and taken into custody for return to enslavement, but a group of abolitionists stormed the courthouse and took him away, hid him on Beacon Hill, and shunted him via the underground railroad to Canada. President Millard Fillmore himself ordered an indictment against 9 Boston abolitionists, and a trial ensued. This is a wonderful story, very readable. The kind of book that makes you want to go to the present day scene and travel the paths described in the book. Which is what I did.

A counting book that left too many unanswered questions to appeal to the masses. 10 black birds use various materials and machines to get themselves over a river. Each one gets across until the 10th bird decides to use the bridge. An odd duck that will appeal to the technical-minded and those with a soft spot for non-sequiters. Yeah, not for the masses. But memorable. -T

This was an odd and interesting book. I'm not exactly sure that I liked it, but I'm glad I read it. It's about Ned Moon, spending a summer with friends at a country house in England; all is going well, and he is perfectly happy with himself and his life, until Marina, the wife of one of his dear friends, makes her appearance and Ned falls head-over-heels for her. The novel is a rather dream-like study of the effects of this passion on Ned's sense of himself, with much dissecting of emotions and a lot of beautiful descriptive prose. I didn't much like either Ned or Marina, but I think that's one of Strachey's points; passion happens to everyone, and in unexpected ways, and it is rarely convenient or pretty no matter how poetic its manifestations may appear to those caught in the moment. There's also a thread throughout the novel of the clash between Marina's very contemporary 1950s ideals, and the pre-WW2 ideals of Ned and his friends. Marina is desperately sincere, very concerned about the future; the friends are somewhat resigned to the life they've known fading, and while they condemn the terrible mass-produced foods and clothing worn by the working-class villagers, they make no real efforts to fight against the current of the times. As Strachey herself was fifty when the novel was written, and was very much of that upper-class world which was dissolving in the wake of the second World War, I found this the most fascinating part of the novel, along with the dialogue. From everything I've read about the Bloomsbury group, she captured their sort of witty, playful, occasionally obscene conversations perfectly.

I laughed out loud. That's a good sign. The humor is quirky and dry, but it can feel canned or forced at times. And sometimes I think I was just laughing at British idioms like "legging it" and "to do a runner." It's a story about a family of tepid adult characters, none of whom are that likeable, or dislikable for that matter. At nearly the end of the book you start to care about them a little, but then maybe you only like them because you have grown used to them. Give it a read anyway- if only for Mark Haddon's language and use of ultra specific details for humor.
