The good: - There aren't nearly enough pro football books in this genre! This one really showed and talked about the game a lot, too. Made me excited for football season. Yeah, I'm a football fan, and I am guessing Pepper Espinoza is as well. - Multiracial in a very natural way. It felt like football players would relate to each other like this since they have been playing together forever. I wish they had both guys on the cover. - DeShawn is a high energy, fun guy, and smart and very good at his job too. It is fun seeing him meet and become friends with his childhood hero. The not so good: - Patton's feelings and attitudes about being injured, past his prime and dumped by his team were probably pretty realistic, but they certainly went on and on. I was 40% into the book before there was any relief from the sulking and emoting and gloom. And he wasn't Mr. Cheerful after that. I wish we had more of DeShawn's POV and less of Patton's. - The oddest epilog I've ever read. The ending is HFN and unsettled, so I was looking forward to the epilog to find out how the gays are doing, and it was some commentary about a game. We learn that DeShawn is still playing and Patton isn't. That's it. Nothing about their relationship at all. The story is a pretty standard sports-with-romance tale. Whether you like it will depend on whether you like the sport and whether you like the guys. The writing was fine, but I found some of the choices about what to cover in detail and what to skip over with a sentence a bit awkward.

** spoiler alert ** Same as the first, I couldn't stop reading it, but it's not that great. Some characters are too flat, some plots/resolutions are contrived, characters do things that are really out of character, etc. It does hold one's attention, though! The Amish are interesting.Spoiler warning!I was disappointed that the whole Katie imposter thing ended by the imposter suddenly leaving. We were led to believe that she was really committed to getting the money and it was a bit wierd that she just left. That plot was pretty good (she arrives to find an imposter and instead gets a job as a maid), I thought, until the anticlimatic resolution. The Alyson and Dylan characters weren't really that well developed, though they played pretty big roles. Also we were led to believe Dylan was pretty devious, but he and Alyson just up and leave for a quick, neat, contrived resolution. That could have used more drama.

Sequel to the Waterborn, and not quite as good, but still excellent. I liked that the heroine did not automatically fall into the hero's arms at the end. I also liked the culture clash and the character's struggles to adapt.

I have to admit that I found this even more frustrating than Mansfield Park, and a lot less enjoyable. This was Austen's last novel and probably written for the money. It has all the Austen formula, a nice plucky herione,a brooding lord who is more than he appears, scheming relatives, a revelation which changes the whole story, and of course endless social parties. What this doesn't really possess and needs is Austen's wit. Lady Russell and Anne's father practically beg to made fun of. Especially considering how Anne's father is chasing after another daughter's best friend. And speaking of which, what is Elizabeth's story? She seems totally asexual. One wonders if she isn't a early percurser to Jos Smedly in Vanity Fair, an obviously gay character in a world where no one could talk about it. At any rate, I was disappointed. Mostly by the endless telling rather than showing of what is going on. Dialoge please!
Loved it!

2 out of 10.
I'd give it more like a 3.5....quite good...entertaining and all the little stories (chapters) were fun to read. Her writing style was involving, but did it make me think or question things? - no. Fun read none the less.

I read this book so many times when I was young that I have lost count. One of the best historical fiction books I have ever read and gave me an understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust and the interest to find out more. Also gave me an appreciation of my heritage.
