Henry Stabell hennamann — Biographical but also an attempt to tell the story of a Hmong family and their journey from Laos via Thailand to St. Paul Minnesota. Also I think it was too ambitious to combine the author's story with a history of the Hmong people, it is a powerful book. It is striking that many of these families survived and prospered in the US because they arrived here before so called welfare reform.

Heidi Wenger heidiw — This is a fascinating piece of historical fiction about a talented, educated woman, Mamah Boswick and Frank Loyd Wright and their intense love affair in the early 1900s. Both are married with children and familial obligations when they meet and choose a scandolous path with a very high price to be paid as their families slide away from them. Wright is a collosol personality with vision and fierce individualism but that leaves others in his wake. Great read especially through a modern feminist lens about a woman way ahead of her time.

Marcello Schirone barcelloea86 — I thought this book was fantastic. Where I found "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" to be slightly tedious and the language to be ridiculously flowery in places, this book was straightforward. It briefly told the story of its predecessor, then expounded. The writers exposed the effects that the poverty had on following generations. James Agee's personal issues and motivations were also mentioned, which made some of his own writing seem a little more clear. I found the person of Garvrin Arlo to be particularly poignant. While others in his and the neighboring families had risen above, I don't see from any angle how he could have. This is a book of profound sadness in reality with a few glimmers of hope.

Teaghan Rankine teagie_doll — Couldn't really warm to Jack and definitely not Lucy. I think I liked the trolls better than any of the human characters in the book... oh! Except for Olaf and Heide. Pretty interesting storyline though.
