Jayachandran Chakrapany jayakrishnanaluva98c — I've never liked Wells. This is the first of his books I've been able to force myself to finish. I didn't love it but it was FUNNY! My friends, no doubt smarter and more learned than me, told me the book contained social commentary, that Wells was a socialist with an agenda of showing the superiority of that type of system. Poor Mr. Polly seems to wander around with no aim, his past, with a dead mother and an emotionally absent father provides no support and he stumbles into his future with no clear goal in mind. He puts one foot in front of the other. He's also cantankerous, not easy in his relations with others. This causes him no end of troubles but that provides much of the the humor. Through a small inheritance he's able to set up shop and marry but he puts no effort into either shop or wife. He prefers to read all day in his lonely shop and pick fights with first one neighbor and then the next until he's alienated all of them. Is this where socialism comes in? Free trade = bad, leads to discontent and alienation? Then he finally goes too far and creates a catastrophe but for once makes it work for himself. He leaves shop and wife and finds, eventually, a place he feels he belongs, where he can relax and watch sunsets, feel content. But the best part of the book and what made it worthwhile for was the slapstick comedy.

Darryl Turner renrut — Williams follows in the footsteps of animal fantasies such as Watership Down, and in this book, features cats. Like Adams in Watership Down, Williams pulls no punches, and so the sensitive cat-lover may not want to read this one. I definitely had a few painful moments reading it. It's a great story, though- creative, imaginative, and not at all fluffy.

Johnathan Bawer john_bawer — I'm a longtime of Patrick Rothfuss from the days of his college advice column in the UW-Stevens Point student newspaper. But his writing in this book is on an entirely different plain. I can't think of another book with a more realized world and realistic characters. More than being well written, it is simply fun to read. Many fantasy books can be overdone with exotic names and places, but here they sound familiar and fascinating. This book is awesome.

Jhon Lopez jhonlopez_ab72 — As always the movie does not do this book justice. It's beautifully written and does not Americanize it's terms and ideas which in turn forces the reader to learn something new.

Oscar Mclaren _itted_reations — the language is beautiful, but i never felt invited to participate in journey's delicately constructed world. instead, the entire book i felt like an outsider looking in, yet that didn't feel organic to the work. i'd like to read more of journey's poetry, because it promises something intriguing and unique. her blend of the personal and the baroque is refreshing.

Kaori Takaoka takaokakaoe4fb — This novel is so dear to my heart because I saw the Broadway musical twice. (I love the songs!). The book is obviously more detailed but I still love both media nonetheless. It is absolutely AMAZING and Victor Hugo could not have written any better, what I believe to be one of the best novels of all time. If you choose to read this, be prepared for its huge size and small print. The length of the novel did intimidate at first but throughout the course of the novel, I was captivated by the author's wonderful plot, character development and access to the themes of humanity. I did read a translation that I wasn't really too crazy about - yet the story was still able to permeate and blossom through the poor translation. THAT alone, is one of the elements that makes for a great novel. I plan to reread this again but with a preferred version this time, probably the more popular translator, just to get a sense of the comparison and whatnot. Jean Valjean's character is so rich that you have to love him no matter what. I'd like to get more in depth later when I reread the book again. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who appreciates history, philosophy, romance and on and on. That's how many layers the book covers. I adore this book to the fullest!
