Another favorite. I will be recommending/forcing my kids to read anything I loved as a kid. It's for their own good, of course.

Cerebral, yet accessible, Old Glory is difficult to peg in terms of genre. Travel narrative approaches, but any classification would fall well short of the mark. Raban incorporates history, mesmerizing descriptive prose, biographical morsels, and sparse but welcome bits of dry British wit in this journey through America atop its longest river. In fact, Raban's Englishness is part of what makes the book so appealing. You see America, warts and all, from the eyes of an intrepid and analytical outsider. Raban is a stylist who reveals himself to the reader slowly. I found him to be a very interesting, complex, and slightly tortured figure. He is nearly as intriguing as the voyage itself. Never again will I look at the Mississippi River as just some long line on a map. The whirlpools, the logs, the dangers; always moving atop and into the unknown on a vessel ridiculously undersized and unsuited for such a trip; a metaphor, certainly. In terms of writing style, there cannot be many better than Jonathan Raban. Here's a writer, you think, you will come back to.

This is a story about a boy who plays basketball with the big boys for the first time. In the beginning his confidence level is low because he is so little. By the end of the story his confidence is high because he scored the winning point. I would suggest this story to my students who like sports or students who have low self confidence.

What a strange book! Prior to reading this I had a rather romanticised view of Americas South (well not including the whole slavery issue). After reading this book I am left with an abiding sense of the strangeness of the south. There is one point in the book where the author explains American history..."American history, some say, could be written in terms of whiskey as well as wars and wandering tribes and the result might say more about the American character - about the perennial battle between liberty and the rule of law." and it makes a whole lot of sense. As the saying goes "Only in America".

The only decent story shares the title of the book. Every story differed little than the last, either the character changed (which was never a male), the setting changed, or the problem changed which was either an identity conflict or blind dependence on someone else. Each story almost always had a caged bird of a woman who was with an unappreciative man or had some sort of dysfunctional relationship with men. Oh Jhumpa, you can only repeat the same themes so many times before someone wishes you would stop writing and instead smash your hand under a hammer. I only liked her style of writing which was compact and dry, it complimented the stories well. Overall it was the lack of variation in the themes that made me want to pull my hair out, I would have liked more variation.

Love the surprise ending...she serves his justice. The story is very short though.

ok, a bit "lifetime" and unsophisticated, but moving and personal
