This was a really interesting read for me. It was quick. Read it in one day. But the entire time, I wasn't really sure how I felt about it, on the whole. It was composed of short stories and there was one or two that I knew I really liked, but the rest I couldn't tell. Not that I thought any were bad. I knew they were all good and well written. In the end, I would have to say that I liked it. And maybe thats the point. Maybe each individual story leaves something in the air and it isn't until you've thought on it for a bit and read more that you can really know.

I enjoyed this book very much and the only reason i didn't give it 5/5 was because I too got completely lost in places. It would make a great beach read - so you could read it without having to put it down and then try to remember where you were when you pick it up again! However - in contrast to other reviewers who said it was a poor rip off of One Hundred Years of Solitude, I have to admit (to my shame) that I have never finished that particular book, so perhaps The House of Spirits is an easier read for those of us who have to fit reading in around the rest of their lives? Or maybe it's a different animal entirely and if I ever got around to finishing OHYoS I'd be able to argue the toss... In either case, Isabel Allende writes beautiful, lyrical prose and this is an artfully woven tapestry of a novel.

Mary Ann Shaffer used a great style of writing - all letters - to invite the reader to get to know (and admire) the characters in the book. The characters are from Guernsey (Channel Islands) and write letters to (and receive letters from) Juliet - the main character. Not only did Ilearn about the Channel Islands during WWII, I enjoyed getting to "know' the characters. It starts off slowly - but once you get into it, you're hooked! In fact, as soon as I finished it, I turned to the beginning and started again. I just didn't want to put it down!

This book was so bad I couldn't finish it. Incredibly juvenile writing. I know it's supposed to be fantasy, but the reader should be able to buy into what's happening. I just kept rolling my eyes and thinking, this is ridiculous. YA fiction can be amazing--one of my favorite genres, in fact. This one isn't worth the time it takes to read the prologue.

Books tend to spark mini-obsessions with me, so I have to be careful reading them, from time to time. Well, most anything sparks mini-obsessions with me, so a book is as good a thing as any. "Word Freak" got me playing Scrabble, which I'd never done before in my life. It also convinced me very quickly that I would never be a championship Scrabble player, so I didn't have to worry about this obession becoming anything serious. Fastis's account of the depths to which Scrabble players go to become the best is illuminating, and the characters who float through the book are quirky, entertaining, and, occasionally, more than a little pitiful. It's not as good a book about games as "Positively 5th Street,' but "P.5.S." is about Hold'em poker, a much more intrinsically interesting game to me. I'd recommend both of them, if you have any interest in the games they're based on.

"The unhappiest people I know, romantically speaking, are the ones that like pop music the most; and I don't know whether pop music has caused this unhappiness, but I do know that they've been listening to the sad songs longer than they've been living the unhappy lives." -p.25 "'Have you got any soul?' a woman asks the next afternoon. That depends, I feel like saying; some days yes, some days no. A few days ago I was right out; now I've got loads, too much, more than I can handle. I wish I could spread it out a bit more evenly, I want to tell her, get a better balance, but I can't seem to get it sorted. I can see she wouldn't be interested in my internal stock problems though, so I simply point to where I keep the soul I have, right by the exit, just next to the blues." -p.75

This was the second half of a story begun in "Blackout," and although I think it could have been one book quite easily, I still enjoyed it. The story is set in WWII London, where time-traveling historians are worried that they won't be able to get back, and worse yet, may have affected history just because of their presence.

Okay. I was introduced to Karen Marie Moning's writing through her Fever series and while this is worlds apart from that gorgeous, wild ride, it was still extremely satisfying. I like time travel romances. I like Highlanders (see how far I'm willing to go to scientifically explore if Highlanders can swing their swords as well as I think they can!). I like Fae. I like bold modern women who manage to persevere despite all the challenges thrown at them. I also like big, muscular, brawny, handsome men. THIS BOOK HAS GIVEN ME EVERYTHING I WANTED AND MORE! I loved Hawk. Loved him. The guy could have been a shallow, conceited ass and instead he turns out to be a tragic, noble, downright AWESOME guy. He's the kind of guy I'd travel through time for. I'd give up flushable toilets and my ipod and the internet for him. I would. That's a level of awesome that you don't often see. So, yeah. I loved the book. I loved Adrienne. I loved Hawk. I liked all the sneakiness of the Fae and the delectableness that was Adam Black. The total upside to this book (besides how much I like it) is that I have all the rest of the books in this series to look forward to. Delicious. -Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal

Amazing. You can expect nothing less from Foer. The characters are so real and distinct. I have a friend who believed Jonathan in the book was a real person until I broke her heart and told him, no, he was fictional. The story line confuses you for a while but it doesn't matter because every word brings you closer to illumination. And he writes so beautifully you can't complain.

* Realmente * genial, bien, bien escrito, buen flujo. El escritor consulta a expertos, agregando diferentes voces y opiniones sin dañar el impulso o la cohesión del libro. Muy recomendable, especialmente si escribes Post Apocalyptic SF.
